We don’t have a sacrarium in our church. My son would like to install one for his Boy Scout Eagle project. We have not been able to find any specific requirements for the installation, either on-line or through the company that sells sacraria. We know we can purchase a nice sacrarium through our local Catholic bookstore, install it in cabinet and pipe it to the ground, either beneath or just outside the church sacristy. But we are unsure of any specific requirements for doing that.

For ease and cost, we would like to use PVC for the pipe between the sacrarium and the ground. Is there any requirement for what material to use?

One person told us that the pipe must be vertical (presumably so that the sacred species don’t lay in the pipe). But this is impractical. We can slope the pipe quite a bit so it is not horizontal, but it won’t be vertical.

If we go outside, he plans to have a nice protected area in the corner of a garden. Are there any guidelines on the best way to do this?

Anything he does will be better than the current arrangement, but he wants to be sure that he’s doing it right.

Thanks!

Our church has one, and the pipe is most certainly not vertical. It drains into a St. Francis water garden about 150 feet away from the sacrarium.

Call the Chancery. They will put you in touch with the persons who oversee Church construction. You might even ask to see the blueprints of your church. It may have called for one, and for some reason it was omitted.
Good luck!
