Last night I went to the Votive Mass of the Nativity in honor of the Holy Infant King at the Institute of Christ the King (formerly St Clara) in the Woodlawn area of Chicago. It was a cold wet windy night, but the atmosphere at the church was wonderful. Much progress is being made in restoring the church, that was once slated for demolition, and though the congregation is small, the choir is excellent. Truly a wonderful experience.

They are doing great work here in St. Louis also with the St. Francis de Sales oratory.

Yesterday evening was one of those nights I just wished we had a closer Latin Mass, but in the end we wound up going 15 miles in driving sleat and rain to get to the Institute of Christ the King. Still I couldn’t think of a better place to be for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Father Talarico, who was on Relevant Radio during the week, was the celebrant, and gave a fine homily on the history of the Immaculate Conception.

I’m a member of the Institute’s Church in Kansas City (Old Saint Patrick Oratory) and got the chance to visit the Church in Chicago for the Feast of Christ the King. Even without the renovations, it is lovely, as were all the wonderful people in attendance.

:):)🙂

Hello everyone

I have a very silly and simple question but I am just not sure about it. I am currently talking to Rev. Canon Matthew Talarico but how to I greet him ? To I just call him Father ?

Thankyou

I wondered this same thing when the fathers became canons and asked our priest. Since they are canons, it’s proper to greet him “hello Canon Talarico” with a small bow at the waist as you kiss the back of his right hand.

This seems to be a question that gets asked repeatedly. I know I asked it as well! 🙂 I took a look at the order’s homepage, but didn’t see it mentioned, so I submitted the question to them. Maybe they can put something in their FAQs page.

It was re-named St. Gelasius before the parish closed in the 1990s. It was about to be demolished when a neighborhood group wanted to have it declared a landmark. Many architechtural firms joined in. The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest (ICRSS) contacted Cardinal George and took it over in 2006

This church was almost demolished but is now a growing parish with many people driving a long way to attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. I have been there on several occasions and I have always come away edified.

St Clara (now the ICC) is a Henry Schlacks church, and Schlacks was the greatest church architect in the history of Chicago.

It was also the church for the ‘National Shrine of the Little Flower’, especially in the 1920’s after St. Therese was canonized. The church used to be always packed with people for the weekly Novena services. The founder and director of the ‘Society of the Little Flower’ was a Carmelite priest named Fr. Albert Dolan. He traveled to France just after the canonization and talked with St. Therese’s four sisters, her cousin, and other people who knew her. He brought back a lot of relics, most of which were given to the Shrine by her sister Pauline (Mother Agnes of Jesus). The Shrine is now in Darien, Illinois, if I’m not mistaken.

My late mother’s prize possession was a ‘Little Flower’ prayer book. It was from dipping into it on Sunday mornings after Mass as a kid that I got to learn about St. Therese. When my mother died in 2004, the book was placed in her casket and buried with her.

I emailed ICKSP regarding greeting etiquette and here’s the reply – from the Vicar General himself!

The proper form to greet a priest of the Institute of Christ the King would be to address him as Canon, together with the last name or just Canon. His title is an expression of our canonical lifestyle, thus giving the priests of the Institute the pontifical recognition of our Constitutions.

🙂

This is my parish though I live in the south suburbs of Chicago. I love the Tridentine Mass and I love Canon Talarico. He will answer 🙂 to Father but Canon is most correct.

-with His grace,

Denise
