Does anyone know the qualifications for a layman to become an Instituted Acolyte? Are college courses necessary?

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not;
In all your ways be mindful of Him, and He will make straight your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6

It’s one of the steps on the road to ordination, so future priests and deacons are instituted as acolytes.

I’ve only heard of one diocese that has instituted acolytes. (I believe it’s Lincoln, Nebraska.) So if you want to be an instituted acolyte but not prepare for ordination, I guess the first requirement would be to move to Nebraska.

***I live in Maine and I read about one layman who was instituted within this last year. I could ask my Pastor about it but I’m not sure if its appropiate for me to ask or whether a person should be invited first by the Pastor. Thanks for respnding. ***

When laity were first allowed to become EMsHC here, our archbishop didn’t much care for the idea so he promoted Instituted Acolytes instead. While our new archbishop has permitted the laity to become EMsHC, we still have our IA’s. 2 years ago we added another 5 to our parish. 🙂

No, you do not need a college degree to become one, but you must attend a training program. Formation takes several months, maybe a year, I’m not sure. It might depend on the parish and the program used.

I’m not sure how they were selected, whether they volunteered or if they were asked. It may have been a combination of both.

Go ahead and ask your parish priest. He will be the best to advise you.

The decisions are made by the bishop to have the program and what formation will be required.Those interested should call their diocese.
