My brother was saying mean things to me and said, “But it’s true” when I told him it was mean to say so I told him insults to show him that just because it is true it is still hurtful but then he got very upset and I felt bad. I was wondering if this was a sin. I would guess it to be since I could have showed him differently but I want to know if it was mortal or not.

Thank you

i think it might be since God commanded us to love our neighbor as are self

We are required to tell the truth and not lie, but we are not required to tell ALL truths at ALL times. We should love our brothers and try to share truths that are necessary for their well-being, and in a charitable way.

Depending on what was said, how it was said, and the intention behind the statement it could very well be a sin. Make up with your brother! 🙂

Definitely ask your confessor, just to be certain.

Just my 2-bits: If this was in private…just you and your brother, then I don’t see where there is a sin taking place on your part. You were teaching him a life lesson of how to treat you as he wants to be treated. You showed him the hurt that you were feeling. Apologize for any hurt he felt and let him know that you, too, felt that same hurt by his actions. He owes you a likewise apology.
