I dunno kage, I think for him with a recent work history and nothing showing he’s unable to work or has a history of that, and since his D1 is well controlled…I think SSI would be near impossible to get. Don’t mean to sound doom and gloom…I could be wrong.🤷

I feel for you Rob’s, I had to do COBRA for 4 of us for a month due to a lay off and then reinstatement, and it was ridiculously high. and certainly something i never could have sustained. One month was very taxing to the finances even.:gopray2:

I don’t have any suggestions other than what has been said, prayers for you though

Exactly. I used that Dave Ramsey link, btw. I sen the guy recommended an email and he responded by calling us within 15 minutes. Very nice guy too. But he said in 20 years in the business he hadn’t been able to ever get a type 1 diabetic covered on an individual plan. (at best dh might get very high end coverage, but it woudl not cover any diabetic related treatment or meds or caused conditions) He recommended we try the state insurance plan.

we have Aetna and or United now via his work (his company lets us choose which carried, but the cost is the same) so they were the first we called.

IF they would cover him at all, they will exclude any and all diabetes care or related treaments or conditions.

We need his diabetes covered as that is only current health issue.
altho dh half-joked that he see’s an on-coming ulcer in the future.:(😛
*I plugged in though, a ficticious person, who I ‘made’ diabetic, and those were the prices. I actually got to the site, through googling ‘insurance for diabetics.’ I think you should call ehealth, because it ‘appears’ anyways, that they will work with diabetics, for reasonable rates. *

Does he have a job prospect lined up?

If not, he might look into SSDI then at least he could get Medicaid 😦
*I was going to say that, as I googled insurance for diabetics, I noticed that could be an option. Martha, I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this right now. 😦 While things are tough, until your husband finds other work, could you guys reverse roles and you find a job with benefits, at least his medical condition would be covered. Just trying to throw out any and all ideas. *

no jobs lined up yet.
**he is considering becoming self-employeed to see if he can get contract work in his current field (which he can’t do at the moment b/c he is under non-competeive contract with his current employer) **
He is also currently taking electrical wiring courses and something else I forget the term for in the electricity field. (figures people always need elctricians and plumbers!)😃

of course the side effect of either of these options is that self-employment doesn’t come with insurance either.😦

I fail to comprehend how he could get disability benefits. he is not disabled even a little and it capable of work. he just isn’t finding employment yet. and honestly? I don’t think he’s ego could handle being called to say he is at this point. feels like poo as it is to not have a job lined up yet. is it really a disability to simply need to eat regular meals and have an tube of insulin flowing through your leg/arm? I should hope not. the closest either of us can come to “disability” is that if it’s a highly physical job, he has to be extra careful to eat enough to keep his sugar from dropping.🤷

after 10 years out of the work force, any job I might get (and it’s a big if) would barely pay for any insurance coverage it would offer.
plus dh is taking classes and such trying to improve his income potential so he wouldn’t be able to man the homefront solo right now.

and he would rather work 3 part-time jobs without benefits to keep us in house and larder than have me work out of the home.

if he couldn’t work, that would be different. but he can and he wants to. and he’s more likely to find a decent job than I am, benefits aside.

hmm, I’ll try to recreate it again, maybe I missed something.
but when I called aetna and UH, they both said the same thing. it would be expensive and it woudln’t cover anythign diabetic related. so yes, technicly I can get him insurance, but no, I cannot find anythign to cover his actual diabetic needs.

**Okay, try this:

www.diabetic-health-insurance.org* That is how I navigated to get to the quoting section.*

Are there any professional societies that he is (or can be) a member of through his line of work? I know the Engineering Society for my field offers group insurance options… 🤷

*You could try this:

www.cinergyhealth.com*

This looks like a group that is working in tandem with the government? I skimmed the website, but maybe check it out? I know you will find something that is reasonable and covers what you need, but when it comes to insurance, it sometimes can be like finding a needle in a haystack, I know. Praying for you guys. :o

If no insurance options, or if have to settle for very high deductibles, contact your local American Diabetic Association. ADA offers syringes and testing supplies and certain insulins at no cost. Also, look in to assist programs thru drug companies. Just a thought.

I see that you have two different carriers from which to choose, but let me throw another angle out there …

Does his company offer more than one plan option with either (or both) of those carriers? In other words: his company might have signed up for (for example) an expensive plan, a medium-priced plan, and a ‘bargain-basement’ plan with Aetna, and maybe similar with United. Depending on the state involved (and the size of his company) they could offer 2, 3, or even more plan options that the employees can choose from.

If you’re not sure, it’s worth asking about. If you’re on a more expensive plan now (which, from your description, it sounds like) you could possibly move down to a lower-priced plan and get the 65% subsidy for that. COBRA enrollees have the same enrollment rights as active employees, so if they offer multiple plan options to the active folks, they’ll have to give you the same options when you move to COBRA.
