Hello,
Glad to stumble upon this forum as im having a tough time dealing with Open Bible followers. A bit of background of me, went to Catholic school for 6 years, been raised and still practice Catholicism but not as much as others. I’ve been dating my girlfriend for the past 9 months as she was raised in a very strict religious household. I’ve been to their church and I’m just not a fan of it. Her mom typically brings up religion even though I’ve told her im not comfortable discussing it. We went to a religious retreat in Michigan were their beliefs were blasted to me every day and I was overwhelmed. Basically their response to everything is why don’t you pray directly to god instead of to patron saints or going to confession. I have a hard time trying to defend my believes, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I could put it in my words, but I think the CA answers do it way better than me.
Here are some good posts in my opinion :
Confession
Saints
Saints and the Bible

This might be a wake up call to learn or take your religion more seriously.
Be open minded and if you don’t know how to answer something always make sure to say : " I don’t know, but I will get back to you ! "
Its humble and also gives you another chance.
You could also ask them the question : "How did people believe before the Bible was established ? "
The Bible is an authority but its not the ultimate authority. The ultimate authority rests on God, which he partly gave to the church by leading it with the holy spirit. Of course all of this is in light of the Bible and does not contradict it.
Hope that helps 🙂

When my husband and I had our marriage convalidated, one of our guests (who is formerly Catholic, now non-denominational) told me I didn’t have to confess to a priest, but directly to God.

Hope 1960: have you asked him how does he know if God forgave him when he asked God directly?

They probably blast you by saying that need to be born again. Steve Ray is really great at explaining this. God bless you.

I highly recommend The Catholic Answers Bible . It will give you straight forward answers to common objects to Bible only Christians.
Patrick Madrid does an excellent job of showing how easy it is to misinterpret a simple six word sentence in h is book Where is that in the Bible? He recommends using the RSV for ecumenical discussions to avoid differences in translations since that is the most common translation used across denominations. You can pick up a small paperback from Ignatius Press.
My parish recently had home visits and gave parishioners copies of The Catholic Church and Fundamentalism, about how to answer the attacks of Fundamentalists.

A few months back, a Baptist respectfully asked me about the Hail Mary. Although I didn’t have my Bible with me at the time, I was able to talk about the Scriptural and historical roots of the rosary. I pointed to the Angel’s Salutation as well as the Magnificat as Mary visited Elizabeth. You can point to Mary being listed first at Cana where she was invited to the Wedding, and interceded at the first miracle, and was given to us as Mother at the Cross. He listened and ended with the question I knew was coming. Yes, we do pray directly to the Father through His Son. As Catholics we do pray directly to God.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a Lutheran minister who died under Hitler. In his book, The Cost of Discipleship, he quotes Martin Luther regarding the importance of confession. Confession is “a remedy against pride and self-deception.”
If I am afraid to confess my sins before a man, how will I ever be able to stand before the throne of God on Judgment Day? When I have a problem, a struggle I need a friend to talk it over with. Use Scriptural authority to show where Christ gave the Apostles the authority to forgive or retain sins. The priest provides a human face to the God in whom I believe, as well as spiritual guidance to help keep me on the right path. This takes humility on my part.

Wherever two or more are gathered, there is God. God is God of the Living and not of the dead. I may trust in members of the Communion of Saints to intercede on my behalf, just as I might ask a friend to pray for me. I can just as easily pray directly to the Father through the Son, as do all Christians.
