So.

When MOST people compare saint’s intercession and praying for those in purgatory to the occult, they are trying to disprove the Catholic doctrine. However, I am TOTALLY faithful to the catholic doctrine.

I just dont get why it stops there.

The occult is wrong because it contacts the dead, opens that door, ect.

But so does saintly intercession, and that brings GRACES. People in heaven pray for us POWERFULLY.

But if I were to hold a seance in my house(I wont, i am not that stupid), my house would be haunted by demons until I called a priest to handle it. And I WOULD NOT see my loved ones, I would see a demon.

Why? This goes both ways-Couldnt demons disguise themselves as the saints and those in purgatory? And why dont they both work? Intercession and the occult are both trying to contact the dead, but one brings miracles, another brings horror. WHY!?

Im not questioning what is, but why it is that way. I KNOW one is good and the other isnt, and I have researched both. I just dont understand how they are similar but with radically different results.

Thoughts?

The Occult calls on the Devil. Praying for the dead to the Saints, who are Alive in Christ is quite the opposite

The difference is, when you engage the occult through seances or divination, you are calling the spirits to you. You are inviting them to come to you. Asking for intercession is not an invitation to commune with you. We do not expect a direct response from the saint. With the occult, the whole purpose is to solicit a direct response from the spirit; a two-way interaction. Praying to saints is strictly a one-way communication. And yes, demons can appear as souls from purgatory or saints or holy angels. You have to be discerning.

I read a great book about a mystic who said that the devil would frequently appear to her disguised as priests, saints or souls from purgatory. The devil has a never ending amount of tricks at his disposal. One Saint said that it was impossible to tell the difference between a Saintly apparition or the devil disguised as one. She devised a little trick, she would say something like: “Glory be to God our Heavenly Father” or “Praise Jesus” being careful how she phased it- it had to clearly be a blessing to God. A Heavenly visitor would always repeat her greeting with fervor. The devil would change the wording- avoiding having to give praise to God. When it was clear that she was dealing with Satan she’d order him to leave in Jesus’ name.

I have a question regarding seeking a direct response. Many people who pray to St Therese the little flower either ask for or receive a rose, scent of rose etc in response.

Is that ok to ask for?

I suppose that would be under the category of “signs from heaven” which is permissible to ask for, as long as you have a compelling reason to ask, and not out of curiosity for entertainment’s sake. In the case of St. Therese, the petitioner is asking directly to the saint, and by proxy, God. That would be a different thing from asking “any and all comers” like you would at a seance or conjuring. I’m going to guess that if a faithful person pleads to a real saint in heaven, God will protect that petitioner from demonic deception. After all, what kind of father, when asked for bread, gives his son a stone? Matthew 7:9-10
