Intercession - who to and who not to?

When praying for an intercession, who are we allowed to ask from? Generally a lot of people ask saints, but how about people in the venerable stage, like Pope Pius XII, is it ok to ask for his intercession?

Of course! How else would any miracles ever be performed? That’s how saints are cannonized… someone asks for their intercession, a miracle happens, and that is used to prove that the saint is the real deal.

Some people think that it’s better to pray to the not-yet-fully-cannonized because they’re not as “busy.”

Indeed - there’s been many a Venerable or Blessed declared as patron of a particular cause, as Matt Talbot has been of alcoholics. Such patronage means we are encouraged to pray to that Venerable or Blessed in regard to their particular issue. Sounds fine to me.

There are those who pray to Venerable Matt Talbot who are not themselves alcoholics but ask for his assistance in helping others who are. Some prefer MT solely because they have a Dublin or Ireland connection.
