I’m a Catholic sophomore in high school and there’s this great girl I know. I think there’s a possibility that she’s interested in me, and I’d ask her out in an instant save for the fact that she’s a Mormon. Should I pursue her or not? (I don’t know a lot about Mormonism, but it’s a Christian church, right?)

It is not a christian religion and you are too young anyway to be pursuing any girl.

BTW, you should not refer to other denominations (Christian or not) as churches. There is only on Church in the general sense. In the particiular sense, each Catholic or Orthodox Diocese in is a church.

Ex-Mormon here. I have mixed thoughts on this, as you might be one to help her convert AWAY from it, but at the same time, Mormons can be quite crafty. It is NOT a Christian church no matter what they try to tell you. They have a fundamentally different idea of who Christ was, as well as the rest of the Trinity. They believe that they are three distinct persons, with the Father and the Son having bodies.

So, I would ask, how strong is YOUR faith?

Do not date her. I was Mormon too they are VERY CRAFTY! They seem real nice and will hijack your faith in a matter of “family home evening” get togethers. Besides like someone else said you shouldn’t be dating you’re a kid still (no offense) dating is to prepare to marry.

DoT

My husband married me when I was still Mormon. But he was 34 years old.

DO NOT date a Mormon. Her (or her family’s) ulterior motive will be to convert you. You are too young to know yourself or your Faith well enough to see their heresy.

Be her friend, be the best Catholic you can be.

When I was younger [Junior in HS] I had a great Morman friend [male]. Yeah…he was/is very nice. His family was very nice. I started hanging out with him. Then there was one family get together after another. Then going to Wednesday “craft nights” at church with his family. Everyone was nice…but then, they started bringing up religion. And got upset when I’d tell them what Catholics thought. Nick and I, alone, could discuss, compare/contrast religions for hours with no problems…but I had to stop going to church events…they made me uncomfortable, slightly. And I was pretty strong in faith for my age.

Unless you know you’ll be fine, you know what you believe, etc., she’ll probably be hard to date. Nick was one of my first “crushes.” Oh well. [He moved away…that’s how that story ends…he lived in my town one year].

No, I don’t think it’s a good idea to pursue dating this girl.

And, no, the Mormon religion is not Christian, although they call themselves by that name. The reject the Trinity. They believe in three gods. And, they believe they themselves can become gods. The Catholic Church took steps to specifically declare Mormon baptism invalid due to their lack of belief in the Trinity-- One God in Three Persons.

They also have very strict beliefs regarding life in eternity with their spouse, which can only be achieved if they marry in the Temple. To marry in the Temple requires both be Mormons.

This cannot go any place good.

I would recommend against it. While I disagree that it couldn’t possibly produce anything good as you could be the one to convert her OUT of Mormonism, they certainly ARE crafty, they are VERY evangelical and will do everything they can to convert you, without you having any idea what’s happening. And besides, you are still in high school. It’s probably best to just avoid dating altogether, be her friend and be the absolute best Catholic you can be.

So, I’ve added absolutely nothing new to this discussion, but I hope this comment is helpful in some way 🙂

My daughter was engaged to a non-practicing Morman for about 3 years. Even though he no longer attended his church, he refused to be married in the Catholic Church and that was the deal breaker that ended the relationship. He was great guy and his parents were sweethearts, but he couldn’t totally leave his faith. I would not start a relationship with this girl.

For what it’s worth, I was interested in a Mormon girl in high school. Since I didn’t have a car at the time, the only thing I could do was go to church with them. I got to watch the Mormon videos when I was at the house, too. Horray.

I just something wasn’t right back then, long before I knew anything about Mormonism.

Unlike the rest here, I don’t recommend that you avoid her like the plague, but be aware that her family will likely try to convert you. If you decide to pursue her, there’s nothing any of us can do to stop you, but I ask you to fnd and read the book Mormonism: Changes, Contradictions, and Errors by John Farkas and David Reed.

There’s a lot of un-Biblical things going on in Mormonism and they have a reason to lie, and that’s to cover those things up and get you as a member. They’re almost like the pod-people in *Invasion of the Body Snatchers *in that they will go to almost any legths to convert you and bring you into the fold.

Be very, very careful here.
