Hi,

There. I am clearly not a Catholic, but I do have past experience with Catholocism. I went to a Catholic school from kindergarten all the way through the 12th grade, and then I attended a secular public college. I also was forced by my parents to go to church with them on Sundays, until I ran away when sunday morning for a few hours when I was 17.

I am an Atheist as well as a Satanist, Satanism being an atheistic religion.

For most of elementary school, I did believe in God, but in the same way as the tooth fairy, easter bunny, santa, etc and I stopped believing in God the same way I stopped believing in the others. From then on even though I didn’t know the word, I was just an atheist, and that’s it.

It was only Catholic High School, which turned me from “just an atheist” to an anti-theist, or “militant atheist”. It was around that time as well, that I started listening to Marilyn Manson, and I liked his work so much that I started learning more about him. I learned that he was involved with Satanism and The Church of Satan, so I learned about the religion, I even bought and read the satanic bible, and it made perfect sense, to me, I realized I am a Satanist as well.

Satanism is (to summarize) a religion that states man is just another animal, there is no god, heaven, hell other afterlife, etc and that one should be their own “god”, and live their life to the fullest as an individual.

All that to me sounds not just very rational but very positive.

In 2014, I actually joined the Church of Satan, and am now a registered “Red card” holding member.

I used to have a very arrogant attitude, and thought that all religious people were idiots, but I have calmed down in recent years, and now even though I think a lot of things about a lot of what I call “mainstream organized religions” are harmful, and I may disagree vehemently, I am more open to discussions and disagreements without making things personal.

That brings me to why I am here.

As I said, I have past experience with Catholocism, and I am curious to learn more about it, just as education, I do fervently “believe” in my religion of Satanism, as much as you do yours, so I am not interested in converting, and please don’t try to convert me. I’m interested in learning, that’s all.

I will probably spend the majority of my time just lurking, but everyone now and then I may respond to something, or ask a question, etc.

Hello.

Welcome to the forum. If you are interested, use the search function and browse topics you are curious about. You will find both atheists and members of the Church of Satan here engaging in respectful and fruitful conversation. Again, welcome, we are glad you are here.

Hello and welcome,I wish you all the very best on your journey of learning.Ever forwards, never backwards.

Welcome! I, too, would recommend browsing topics which interest you. The Catholic Answers site has questions which apologists have answered on various topics. Very informative.

live their life to the fullest as an individual.
We have some common ground there. One of the fundamentals of Catholicism is the dignity and worth of each person, and living fully fits right in with that. Of course, between Satanists and Catholics there are some differences on what constitutes living fully.

Welcome to Catholic Answers Forums!

Please do not take this the wrong way,

Its ironic, you believe in satan and do not believe in God. I find many atheists in my life are the same. They believe in evil and the devil, and not in God.

The religion of satanism quite simply
worships the devil. It is sugar coated and sweetened into what you believe satanism is about.
man is just another animal, there is no god, heaven, hell other afterlife, etc and that one should be their own “god”, and live their life to the fullest as an individual.
This is one of the best lies of satan yet. Worship me but I do not exist, instead its all rainbows and happiness.
However satanism is all about satan. The devil.

Begone satan

Not taking it the wrong way.

Your’s is a common misconception that many Christians catholic or protestant have about it. It’s understandable.

In Satanism, “Satan” is used as a symbol of man’s animal nature, liberty, individuality, and pride.

Satan also means adversary, and Satanism is a very adversarial religion towards most others, because unlike most others it is completely carnal and says you have to live now, because it is the only life you have, while the others are mostly spiritual and focus on an afterlife of some sort.

So no, I do not worship or even believe in Satan (or anything else spiritual, supernatural, paranormal, etc I am a rationalist as well). It’s simply symbolic.

@Beryllos

Well we do believe in “indulgence instead of abstinence” so we think we should indulge in things we enjoy, so long as they don’t hurt others.

There’s a difference between indulgence and compulsion though, if something is having control over you, instead of you having control over it, it has become a compulsion and you have to deal with that.

But even among Satanists what it means is very different, because of how very individualistic the religion is, everyone is different, enjoys different things, has different hobbies, interests, income levels, etc.

I personally enjoy porn, masturbation, sex, vintage and modern computers, guns, history, some outdoor activities, and food (I am a glutton).

But then there’s also organizing your life, as you see fit, having your own values, living life your way (that’s the whole ‘being your own god’ thing).

Do you find that Satanism challenges you, makes you grow or be a better person? Does altruism play any part in the religion?

Not altruism really, I mean, you yourself are the focus of course.

However there is a lot of personal responsibility, and a lot of emphasis on self-improvement and accomplishment, which can be challenging.

That’s part of it, you can’t just “let yourself go”, because you’ll end up doing things which are self-destructive, which aren’t good.

It’s why I don’t abuse alcohol, rarely ever recreationally use tobacco, and I don’t use marijuana or harder drugs at all.

I’m afraid the things that you’ve mentioned you’re a glutton for are self destructive ,plus very harmful to others.
Satiating self must be one of the most unappealing things in life,.
Here I have to say God bless and adios.

Just responding for other readers sake.

I don’t see how the things I mentioned I enjoy, when handled and went about properly and safely, can harm myself or others in any way.

I am very careful not to have sex with women who I don’t know are clean, and I am insistent on using contraception.

I take handling and storing my firearms very seriously, and safety is a priority.

The other stuff like computers, history, food, are really already fairly innocuous.

Not inherently.

Like many things, it’s only bad in excess. This goes back to indulgence VS compulsion.

No one asked this, however, as far as death is concerned.

I have made peace with the reality of death. My atheism has forced me to face the fact that some day we all must die, and there’s nothing we can do to stop it.

Satanism has helped me make the most of my life, so when my time comes I will be able to accept my death, and know that I lived my life to the full while I had it.

The song “My Way” by Frank Sinatra, is actually extremely Satanic.

Of course I believe death is death, so when you are dead, you just decompose, and that’s the end of things. No afterlife or reincarnation, remember.

Please explain then, how it got its name satanism, what its roots are, and why a bunch of people are worshipping a ‘symbolic’ entity that was first introduced to humanity in the Old Testament, and runs through to the New Testament as a real living entity.

You are not an atheist if you are worshipping an entity you claim is symbolic.

Satanism was founded in 1966 by Anton Lavey and The Satanic Bible was published in 1969, that’s how it was founded, that’s it’s routes.

Anton looked upon Satan as an exemplar, a character he thought embodied his teachings, and used it as a symbol.

There you go, founded on the real entity , satan. The founder wrote the book himself. On what he thought his man made religion should be about.
It is not the same as Sacred Scripture. For anyone following this thread.
