Brothers and Sisters,

I am coming to a point in my life where i need to make some huge life changing decisions which will strongly impact those close around me. I am 21 years old and have been in the professional work force for nearly 4 years. I initially started the workforce with extremely high motivation and moral and worked my way up the ladder with hardwork. At the same time i have also developed a passion for Scripture and Theology. Two years ago i enrolled into a TAFE course “business admin” to assist my career but found that not to be my cup of tea, in fact i would often just think and write about scripture and theology in class. I have now come to a point in my life where i no longer wish to persue this path i am on as my future career and have chosen to go to uni to study what i am passionate about. I know my passion is theology and that is something i wish to study and be in the field in the future but i am also in a relationship and am not exactly planning to be a priest. What career options are available from these studies?
I have just also recently recieved my parents blessing on doing this and still currently working on getting that from my g/f.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks:D

Glory to Jesus Christ.

There is plenty you can do with a theology degree. Teaching and apologetics full-time (Like our heroes here at CA) are only two of the options. You’ll probably get employment in some kind of teaching ministry with a theology degree. I’m sure others can get more specific than I could.

God bless you Michael, we need more good theologians out there.

Michael,

There are job opportunities as parish administrators operating under the pastor as well as administrative jobs in most dioceses. Other avenues might include working for a Catholic publisher or publication, Catholic news media, Catholic/Christian movie and video media, Catholic investment counselors, Catholic communications, etc. There could be more opportunities on the horizon as Catholics become more involved in business opportunities that support Catholic values. Who knows, you might start and operate one of your own.

Do not give up on the priesthood so quickly. Pray to know God’s call whatever it may be. It is always his will rather than ours that we must follow. If you are called to the married life God will also make that clear to you.

I will pray for you.

My suggestion is to learn intercessory prayer which deepens your relationship with God so that you will be able to listen to what He is wanting from you. I also suggest having someone interceed for you on behalf of what you are called to do. Amazing things will begin to happen.

I suggest you try bellwetheromaha.org and ask them what to do. I know my spiritual walk has not been the same since.

Take a few classes at a good Catholic University. If you like it a degree in Theology will get you many jobs. “Business” degrees are common now days, and many companies do not care what your degree is in, just that you have one. I just hired someone to a supervisory position with a Philosophy degree, and my Degrees have nothing to do with my job. (Not directly anyway)

Thank you everyone for your response, i well and truely appreciate all your kind words. It brought a warm feeling reading your responses, especially the words of support.

I will keep your words with me.

Thanks

Canon Lawyer?
Ed Peters who guests once in awhile on CA could give you the overview on that. If I were a younger man with fewer financial obligations I would seriously pursue it.

I really don’t have anything to suggest, but I will pray for you. I too am descerning God’s will for me.

Pray, pray, pray! 😉

Thank you and i will pray for you 🙂

Godbless

Dear Michael,

You have received some great advice. here is what i would like to say to you. The word of God clearly tell us to be “led by the Holy Spirit”. A scripture that comes to mind is “let the peace of God rule in your hearts.” When I have peace about a situation I have been praying about then I know I can move forward. if I dont, I wait to see what happens next. When I have a terrible sense in my gut, I dont do it. This is a way God leads us. trust Him to guide you as He says he will. I will be praying for you also. please keep us posted! God Bless your every step.

Perhaps, you would be suited to be a teacher of theology at a Catholic elementary or secondary school, or maybe even a college professor. You say that you are only 21 right now, but it is possible that God may be calling you to become a priest or a religious brother. Or perhaps, God may be calling you to become a deacon later on. Do you have a spiritual director? If so, you should probably talk to him. If not, then maybe you should talk to your pastor and see what he suggests.
