Interesting argument for the non-existence of the Christian God

That darkened area is tragic. I remember a man from Lynchburg, Va starting into politics about 35 years ago. Maybe that has something to do with it.
Sorry, I [am not good] with political history. Jerry Ford? In any case, whoever it was, didn’t do it all by themselves. Everything from domestic and foreign shadow governments to voting habits are involved. I always look to myself before assessing blame, though that is SO easy to do! 🙂

  1. If the Christian God existed, we would have cognitive faculties that didn’t moderately or strongly impair acceptance of truth.
  2. We don’t have cognitive faculties that don’t moderately or strongly impair acceptance of truth.
  3. Therefore, the Christian God does not exist.
So far as I can tell, the argument is valid,
I am BRAND NEW to Catholic Answers, and not even a Catholic yet (just being drawn toward it and looking here for answers), but if there’s one thing I do know and feel fairly good with, it’s basic logic.

I’m not responding as to whether or not your premises are true or not, but I can tell you that, unfortunately, your argument is invalid.

Your first statement is an “If A, then B” statement. Your second statement is a “not B” statement. Unfortunately, this logically does NOT imply your third statement, “not A”. So your argument is therefore invalid.

If your argument had instead read
  1. A if and only if B.
  2. Not B.
  3. Therefore, not A.
then this would have been a valid argument.
I didn’t read all the responses to this post, so I don’t know if anyone pointed this out already, and I hope I don’t sound too much like a fuddy-duddy! I am a math teacher and sometimes my mind works best only when I break problems down to their basic nuts and bolts in order to analyze them.

Glad you said this, more like this needed on these pages. Thank you.

ha, except after I posted I realized that MY logic was off and I didn’t take into account for the contrapositive in the OP, and so I deleted my post so I could think about it some more and make sure I wouldn’t embarrass myself before posting, ha ha! 🙂

It was Falwell. To my view, politics has been in a nosedive since his “Moral Majority” turned faith into a campaign slogan.

ARRRRGGGGhhhhhhhh! Fall-well. They are as about as moral as an absentee landlord sending goons for rent. Don’t get me started. Both words of the title of their group are arrogant misnomers. Nuf said. But thanks for clarifying that! 🙂

Neither premise is valid because we did have those facilities when God created us, that is Adam and Eve did. But we lost them in the Fall. Our nature was corrupted so that our inclination is to sin, our intellects darkened so our minds do not comprehend truth as they should, and our will weakened so we do not do the good we know we should do. If modern Catholics were taught these simple precepts, no Catholic could be confused about the matter.
Substituting the word “Christians” for “Catholics,” (and of course Catholics are Christians) I would agree completely with your post.:)🙂

If they were goons, then why were they the ones murdered? I’m not gonna support Jerry Falwell, in fact I would be one of the last to, but theres no reason to make childish attacks on the Gospel to attack him. The bible itself condemns him and many like him; there’s no reason to be discourteous here.

p.s. He was in politics since the fifties; it’s only his “Moral Majority” that started in '79. If you want more reason to dislike him, listen to his comments on segregation.

“When God has drawn a line of distinction, we should not attempt to cross that line”
  • Jerry Falwell on Segregation.
(His logic makes you wonder why we didn’t segregate Gingers and Jews too; doesn’t it?)

Reference, please, or clarification?

Oh, like the Bible? Sorry.
