I wrote a research paper on Metropolitan Sheptytsky’s liturgical reforms for a Church History class that I’m taking. He was a very fascinating and saintly man. I highly recommend Peter Galadza’s book on him, available through the Sheptytsky Institute in Canada.

He visited the cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Pereslavl-Zalessky … The Rector told … Putin … about the history of the Cathedral, which used to be the burial-vault of the Pereslavl Princes in old times.

"In the city of Vladimir the President attended the Christmas Divine service in the Cathedral of the Assumption, one of the oldest churches of Russia decorated with frescos by Andrey Rublyov. Thousands of the city inhabitants prayed together with the Head of State. On the very day of the Nativity of Christ President Putin visited the city of Maloyaroslavets … Archbishop Clement of Kaluga and Borovsk … noted that people have solemnly celebrated the Nativity of Christ from the earliest times and children have had a particular joy.

Many tales and folk songs have been dedicated to the Nativity of Christ. All of them tell us about the triumph of good and the disgrace of evil forces."

Putin was clearly overleaping the Communist era and appealing to the old traditions of Mother Russia in order to awaken the sleeping giant.

Not many people know about these heroic acts of Ukrainian clergy , which used to defend the Jews by risking their lives .
It would be nice if it would be mention in the Jewish Press at least some times.
Unfortunately also not many people know about many historical facts which indeed worthy of attention of humanity.
Millions of Ukrainians died from man-made famine which killed the millions of people ( the quantity of people who died from faine can be compared with population of Canada. Can you compare the horrer of these crime against Ukrainians ? )
But my question is , did you eve read about this in some newspapers , books , tv-history-reearch programs ?
Unfortunately the history for many its just the means of propaganda
And the circles who have more means and influence , they dictate the pinions , point of views .
Not the facts , and not the ‘‘hierarchy of facts’’.
Unfortunately Ukraine does not have the powerful advocates who could reveal to the world the horrers which were done to this long-suffering nation .
And unfortunately a lot of things in this life depends not from th truth but from the perspectives of conviniences and economics.
That’s why actually , the facts about horrer of Ukrainian famine is not known in the world.

Dear Athanasiy,

I worked on a law that declares Holodomor Day an official day in Ontario - and it is now an official day.

Just my little two cents’ worth . .

Alex

I agree that the reletationships between Ukrainians and the Jews were not always good.
But I am absolutely against the blames of the Jews that Ukrainians are anti-Semitic race.
And also against this prison-cases-shows ( like with a Mr.Demyanyuk…) and also I am against this tendency to show the Ukrainians to the world as a pogrom-oriented ethnographical group.
So , why not to show and to say more about great heroic defence of the Jews , why not to say about the tolerance of Ukrainians towards the Jews.
In a lot of Ukrainian cities for a long long time the population was very tolerant towards the Jews.
We always needed doctors , teachers , economists , library people.
Yes , its true that we had a difficult past.
But in my opinion the Jews should follow the word of one of their prophet who actually worned them that in the prosperity of the nation ( where they live ) will be their blessing and prosperity and wellbeing. Neglect of this I would say ‘‘mission’’ to contribute to the nations ‘‘economy’’ , ‘‘science’’ , ‘‘medicine’’ to contribute to the prosperity of the nation where they live , so the neglect of it will bring more and more problems.
We used to be and we are the nation of pesansts who used to work in the field very hard
and the pesants who despise the culture o poverty ( therefore neighther serfdom nor communism are not acceptable for Ukrainian pesants , (may be for the Russians , yes , because the Russians belong to a half-nomadic Asian types of people , by ethnicity by mentality , actually by the way of private life , by the political and socio-economic ideals… ). But not for Ukrainians , because Ukrainians are hard woking , diligent and industrious nation. Yes it has to do also with geographical position , we have a good soil , we belong to the conservative European nation not nomadic Asian who actually hate to work in the land . And my point is that hard-working easy believing and trustful Ukrainian pesant wanted to see the result of its work , not to be cheated and abused.
Unfortunately some times , we could not solve the problems with a Jews in diplomatic , tolerant ways.
But people who blame us in the persecutions of th Jews in the history of our relationships do not consider the reasons of those persecutions , and actually do not consider the persecutions of Ukrainians from the Jews ( is actually anoher topic , of course debateble and not plesant and acceptable for some ) but Ukrainians were pogromed much more and incomparably in a much more cruel ways of mass exterminations tnan the Jews.

If to talk about HOLODOMOR , let us remind
  • were there many news sources which were informed the citizens of foreing countries , like France or England about HOLODOMOR in Ukraine ?
( today we hear a lot of blames about the Middle Ages , but I am sure that the Catholic Middle Ages would rise the Crusade against Satanic Soviet regime who killed so many million people , but in that highly civilized Europe the media in a majorty used to keep silence)
Yes the journalists were forbiden to enter the areas , some were bribed , but still there were the ones who were the witnessers , there were the photos.
There were the proves , but the League of Nations where the main role played France and England did not do any actions.
But the question which today has to be revealed for the up to date awareness of the humanity - ‘’ why ? ‘’
Did the ''christian ‘’ goverments of France , England , US had not the photos of proves , did they not have the ambassadors , consuls , agents who informed them about it ??
Actually , if to talk about the voice of he Church , …only the archibishp of Wien Nansen was loudly saying about it (it did not help of course), but why there was no loud voice about this horrer of the Pope ?

So , not a Christian duty, not a morality , but the politics of conviniences detemined and influenced the goverments of Europe and USA who did not revealed the problem and did not do any thing to defend Ukrainians. ( the good relationships with Moscows were needed at that time because Hitler was coming to the power )
In my opinion its a shame and sin of pragmatic , pagan ,and unchristian Western goverments.

Dear Jakub,

Great to see you here, friend!

Cheers,

Alex

Dear Athanasiy,

A French Jewish journalist, Alain des Roches (I believe that is the correct spelling of his name) spent his entire life defending Ukraine against the charge of generalized anti-semitism. He even demonstrated that, on the basis of population, Ukraine had fewer collaborators with the Nazis than any other European country at the time.

My father himself led a number of Jews to “safe houses” and he has two trees planted in his honour, along with those of other Ukrainians who risked their lives to save their Jewish neighbours, at Yad Veshem.

As for the Holodomor, the problem is not with accepting that it occurred - but why it occurred.

The new government of Ukraine insists that the Holodomor was not only directed at Ukraine’s population, but also at others. This is the reverse of what the Yuschenko government had been defending.

Atanasiy - good points, and largely without the expose of Gareth Jones much of what is actually true about the Holodomor would never have been known in the west, but dismissed through Soviet disinformation. In spite of current President Yanukovych’s pro-Moscow position that this was not genocidal, the known historical facts and remaining documentation do not support his position. Perhaps with the recent protests (most recently as last week at the Ukrainian Mission to the UN in New York City) he will reconsider his position.
