I have no disagreement regarding the point of “giving witness.” At the same time, are there any limits? Will someone say mass on the beach to “give witness”? Will someone say mass in the forest to “give witness”? Will someone have their wedding underwater in SCUBA gear or skydiving in their parchutes to “give witness”? By the way, all of these things and many more innovative things have been done already by Catholics. I am absolutly positive that all parties involved had wonderful reasons why their personal preferences trumped established norms of behavior and reverence for the sacred with one of the reasons being to “give witness.”

I saw that, and they are wrong on one point - they just brought the eucharist into a public area. Mass was not said, and it was treated with respect.

I didn’t watch the WHOLE thing due to time, but good for them. If I can find ANYTHING wrong with it, it’s that I would only have been worried that some jerk-wad would vandalize it.

But way to go guys - that was great!

Carrying Christ around in a duffle bag doesn’t sit well with me.

Jesus said: “Go into all the world, proclaim the gospel to all the creation”.

He started in a manger in Bethlehem, lived in Nazereth and went to the river Jordan to be baptised. He attended a wedding in Cana, gathered His apostles at the sea of Galilee, then went to Capernaum to raise the paralytic. He went into Samaria to meet the woman at the well, to the land of the Gadites to save the man posessed by “legion”, and to Jerico to make the blind see and to have dinner with Zaccheus. He went to the top of a mountain to reveal His glory to Peter, James and John, to Bethany to raise Lazarus from the dead, and, ultimately, to Jerusalem to die for us.

Why should we limit where He goes now!

I would LOVE to get a copy of the text the friar was reading while the monstrance was exposed.

Reading the comments it seems that they started doing this weekly and were eventually forced to stop as it created some controversy. Unfortunately I have to say that I agree it probably wasn’t appropriate as a weekly thing. Maybe once a year or something but not every week.

That said, it was a good idea. 🙂 Kind of sweet in a way. It’s just too bad they took it too far (by the weekly thing and causing the public to become annoyed with them).

I wonder if those who criticize the Friar for the bag will also scold the priest who comes walking into the room where they lie on their deathbed for pulling Our lord out of the sick call bag ?

Something about simply listing all the names of our Lord gets me every time.

I think this was a good idea.

Sad that so many people could simply tune it out and keep going about their business.

I agree, carrying Our Lord in a duffle bag also doesn’t sit well with me. Another thing i don’t like is the fact that the friar was holding the Monstrance with bare hands, and there was no canopy used to shelter the Eucharist.

I believe that the idea was a good one, but they could have gone a little bit out of the way to show a little more respect, other than that it was nice.

Mea culpa for the lower case typo the first time around. :o

That is not our tradition. We normally hold the monstrance with our bare hands and we do not use a canopy. It’s not a Franciscan custom. Friars can do it, but don’t have to do it. Since the early days of the order, back in 1209, the friars carried the Eucharist in a pouch that they hung around their neck. There were no monastrances in those days. It was a type of pix, more like a pillbox.

The monstrance, canopy and veil were more common among the diocesan priests. Remember, most of our friars were not priests and they were very poor. Even those who were priests, didn’t have all these things. We never had this rule. To this day, the Church does not hold Franciscans to this rule. Everything depends on the resources of the community and the custom of the local house.

I hope that helps.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

Given that adoration is was spawned the Holy Spirit to enter my adult life, I’d run to worship if this was happening in my city.

Yes it does help. I’m in a discussion on another forum where some are screaming “irreverence”.

I see good fruits in the video. Faith building is what I saw 🙂

Funny, most priests who commit liturgical abuse say the same thing.
