I just got back from picking up my K age child from her catholic school. I was sitting on a bench next to a older lady who was talking to the pastor who was standing next to her. I was checking my phone messages while they were talking about election day tomorrow. As I was deleting some messages I noticed she had an Obama t shirt on. He left, and we were sitting there for a minute or so, when she said struck up a conversation with me. I explained I was waiting for my child, and she explained she was a nun who was waiting to pick up a child from Ecuador who the school had come into the first grade class to talk about life there. I know some nuns (or most?) don’t wear their religious attire anymore, so I was surprised she was a nun and told her that.
She said that oh, well she did not have her cross on today so that’s understandable I did not know! I can not imagine a cross next to that kind of shirt!
So, she asked me if I would be voting tomorrow and I said you betcha. She smiled, and said she could not wait to see the day that her candidate would be president. I said I can’t wait for the coming of the Lord to put an end to evil.🙂
She was nice, but I was totally in a headspin over this one!
I have already seen others at my parish support him openly but this really surprised me.
So everything was okay until she asked me my last name. When I told her my last name she asked me if I was related to someone (who I am- this person is a doctor) and she rolled her eyes and said she hopes I am a better mother than my sister in law is a doctor! So, now I feel bad but I told her I hope she is a better catholic than Ted Kennedy. :o

Now I think I screwed up things at the school for my kid.😊

That was a pretty nasty thing for her to say. Some nun… maybe next time you see her you should ask her what her spouse thinks of the company she keeps and the words that pass her lips…

Religious sisters are not necessarily nuns. This person is just some celibate who happens to live in a religious community.

She is human, not an authority.

I would’ve given her back more than that. I think telling her you hope she was a better Catholic than Ted Kennedy when she insulted your SIL was mild.

She can’t claim to hide behind what we oldsters used to call “the veil” if she isn’t wearing it. 😃

Wow… an OBAMA shirt? Really? And being that uncharitable about your family? I certainly would forgive anything you said to this person… call it righteous indignation…

You know what folks?

A LOT OF CATHOLICS ARE VOTING FOR OBAMA.

A LOT OF CATHOLICS ARE DOING SO TO END THE WAR.

A LOT OF CATHOLICS ARE DOING SO IN THE HOPE THAT THEY CAN KEEP THEIR JOBS, THEIR HOMES AND FEED THEIR CHILDREN.

A LOT OF CATHOLICS KNOW MCCAIN IS NOT SERIOUSLY PRO-LIFE.

Just sayin’. Just informing. Just lettin’ you know. This is what I am listening to other’s saying. You shouldn’t take it personally.

I know it’s hard for some of you to understand, but the bashing or angst over Catholics voting for Barack on Family Life or Parenting is really frustrating and saddening me.

I am not discussing politics further, I just wanted to state the obvious.

Furthermore I think it’s really sad that Barack Obama’s grandmother died today 😦 . I am saying a prayer for the repose of her soul. :signofcross: What a shame, the day before the election at that.

One more day, just one more day and this will be over. sigh

God Bless.

Oh MY GOODNESS!!! Wow, she was a firecracker huh?

Dude, if your kid’s school is anything like my kid’s then I’ll say a prayer for you right now that you didn’t mess things up! Only those of us who’s kids attend Catholic school know just how  that can be.

Oh and yeah, I woulda said something that snappy back too. What a horrible thing to say to you about your SIL!

God Bless, hope you have a better day.

Based on her t-shirt, my guess is that she probably thinks your insult about Ted Kennedy was actually a compliment!

Next time you might want to reply, “my hope is in the Lord, who made heaven & earth–not Barack Obama.”

I’m sorry if your interaction with the nun upset you, I really am…but sometimes what comes out of people’s mouths is so outrageous all you can do is laugh!

Thanks to the poster who gave me the heads up that a sister is not always a nun! She may just be a celibate living in some community. Well, that sure makes it easier for me to take then!

I wonder what kind of damage control I can do at this point?

I could try to find out her name, but then I would have to talk to the pastor and I am not really up for that. I could hope to bump into her again, but even if I did I wonder if that could make things even worse depending on what she says to me next.
I put a call in to my sil to rack her brain to see if she knows what her beef is.

I hardly think my sil would be where she is if she was not an excellent doctor. I wonder why she said that. Maybe I should come right out and say I am sorry if she had a bad experience, or knows someone who did, but I can’t help if I don’t know what it is?
Maybe I should let my sil tell me what to do. I left her my not important number (its our signal) to return my call whenever.

I think she did laugh at me a little bit when I stammered out my comeback. I was so taken aback I was not my confident self at all.

God bless you, Monica.

I love the “snappy comeback,” even if you stammered it out. May God give me the same courage!
I have a really hard time with those who rationalize voting for a pro-abortion candidate. Abortion has killed* at least* 12,000 times as many people than the war. Some of those who have died in Iraq were innocents caught in the crossfire; *most *were volunteers. *Nobody *has ever volunteered to be aborted - they are all innocent victims.

How can we end the injustice of wars, before ending the far greater injustice of murdering millions of innocents? Who could seriously think we respect the lives of volunteer soldiers, when we allow and promote the killing of our own living children?

Who will care to fight hunger, when one of the accepted methods of doing it is to tell (or force) women to kill their children?

No. No rationalizing for me. I’ve done enough of it in my past.

Praying, and voting, to end abortion,

Ruthie

I wish I could have you join me at Mass Ruthie. I wish I was not going alone to the daily Mass. At least I can go with my child on sat and sun, and sometimes my husband even shows up. But, he just told me this morning he is investigating islam. That will be another thread. When it rains, it pours.:crying:

Don’t feel ashamed, feel proud. That was a putdown of groucho marx-worthy wit.

And if she takes it out on your child, take it up with her superiors.

She was in the wrong insulting your family in such a way and you were fully entitled, if not actually bound by honour to come back with a scathing remakr.

Bravo!

I totally understand what you are saying Ruthie. I respect your position. I want to point out:

The 50000 slain people of Iraq did NOT volunteer to die. Well OK a few did in suicide bombs, but I understand those aren’t even majority Iraqi’s – but insurgents from other countries.

I am not suggesting anyone to not vote the way they want to, I am just saying that whatever you vote on, try and understand and respect that people are making other choices. It doesn’t make them less Catholic (although I suspect I’ll get a flame on that) and furthermore intensity and unwillingness to even appreciate someone has a differing view or opinion (and I am quick to point out that all if not most of us here at CAF ARE pro-life) and the nastiness that goes along with it – well it’s not very Christian-like.

It’s just bumming me out. I completely appreciate and respect anyone’s right to vote how they want to, on issues that are important to them. BUT let’s remember everyone has a story. Everyone has a right to their political beliefs. That’s what this country is founded upon. A good country it is. It’s currently a mess, but it’s a wonderful nation. This has been the craziest election cycle I have ever seen. 😛

God Bless.

Boy am I glad tomorow is election day.

I did not say what I said about the Obama shirt. The religious sister could’ve been wearing a McCain shirt, or a Barr shirt, or a Baldwin shirt, or a McKinney shirt or a Ralph Nader shirt with his parrot friend from YouTube on it.

She wasn’t wearing a habit. She wasn’t even wearing any ID that she was a religious. Our sisters have a pretty religious emblem that they wear either on a chain or on their lapel when they aren’t in the “uniform of the day.” They wear a habit, or they wear business dress at school. Only on Fridays do they add a piece of school spirit wear to their business wear.

It seems Sister thinks her state of life gives her the opportunity to say what she likes, and run to the protection of her status, while still dressing as she pleases.

So, when Sister opened her big mouth and tore down Notsmart’s sister-in-law (how very Christlike of her:rolleyes: ), for Notsmart to respond as mildly as Notsmart did is pretty amazing. If Sister tore down my sister-in-law who was a doctor, I might’ve asked her order, whipped out my cell and called the motherhouse, right there in front of Sister. I can almost guarantee you that Sister has opened her mouth before that way, and she doesn’t want anybody in admin to know she did it again.

I agree that the Obama shirt would not have made a difference to my loosing it with her. She did that on her own.
I am in this stage of life, where someone can hit me with an insult and I tend to, and try most of the time, assume the person is having a bad hair day.
I don’t know a better way to help a person than that. My parents, only fought a few times a year to the best of my recollection. In front of us anyway. But, one thing I remember about it, was when they did- it was over a big reason. Big reasons always were any insults to family. And, with parents that were totally opposite in ethnic backround- this happened now and then. Sometimes it was because one side thought they were superior than the other side. Other times, it was because they did not really know each other that well except on times when it was a wedding or funeral. We were not exactly liked by either side really. Beacuse we were not christians. So, it was kinda a mess. I learned early in life to tolerate outbursts from well meaning, and maybe not so well meaning people. I just figured I would save my fights for the right times. Like my parents tried to do.
In addition, not being a catholic yet, I am easily intimidated by catholic religious, or even catholics in general.😊

I guarantee you that religious are human. Unless it is a religious brother that is also a deacon or priest, they are simply living their vowed life in community. It is a spiritual marriage, often with a bunch of logistic headaches people never consider (This is from somebody who once spent 8 weeks with 83 other women and their bunk beds, sea bags, clothes, hair dryers, 3 washers, 3 dryers, 15 showers and toilets, and a floor polisher- in boot camp).

One big happy family with a lot of rooms and a lot of personalities! But if they are not professional, they shouldn’t expect others to treat them professionally. And Sister did NOT treat you professionally!

I am just letting myself go off in thought, and imagining this life.
This is very hard for me to imagine.

You must really love people to do such a thing. I also live in Chicago.🙂

And NONE of the millions upon millions of babies slaughtered by abortion volunteered for that either. 😦 They have no voice, so we MUST be their voice on election day. Obama has already promised that his first act as president will be to pass the freedom of choice act, which will eliminate ALL restrictions on abortion. Meaning: Abortions can happen while a woman is in labor about to give birth to a healthy full term baby, or that a 12 year old can get an abortion without her parents ever knowing, nationwide. Now THAT is a holocaust, against a race of people being targeted only because of their age.:crying: He has also voted every time against the infants born alive act, meaning that he thinks it’s OK for any baby to be left to die without medical care, even if they are perfectly healthy. That is infanticide, pure and simple. In other words: MURDER. There is NO other political issues that makes it okay to murder innocent babies. NONE.
