Interesting, Odd, or "Different" Habits

(Maybe not the right forum, but I think the people here would best be able to participate in this thread, so I hope it stays here)

Today a few different threads about the Order of Malta and the Knights of Columbus have been going around, and it got me thinking. I always loved the uniforms/habits (I don’t know quite what to call it, considering its membership includes both priests and lay people) worn by the Knights/Dames of Malta. So I started thinking about other Religious Orders and lay groups which have unusual or interesting habits. I know of a few, but I wonder if there are more. Hopefully the diverse group of people on this forum could come up with some fun examples!

Because the Knights of Malta got me thinking of it, I’ll post a picture of theirs first.

Although its very familiar by now, the Sari-type habit used by the Missionaries of Charity is certainly unique.



I think my favorite, however, has got to be the habit of the Heralds of the Gospel.

I really love those Missionaries of Charity ones.

It’s not used any more but the Daughters of Charity used to wear cornettes. I find them quite amusing.



I quite like the Order of Trinitarians ones as well. It’s simple but distinctive.

I live in Rockford Illinois and there were/are some nuns from Africa that have the most Beautiful Blue Habits that I’ve ever seen. I don’t know what order they are from but these black women in their blue habits just look regal!👍

Anyone remember the 1960s TV sitcom called “The Flying Nun” They wore this type of habit on that show.
 
Actually, the Friars Minor have five different habits. This is the habit of the novices of the Friars Minor Capuchin. The Friars Minor Capuchin wear the habit that the Cardinal is wearing in the picture above in brown, grey, white or blue. The Friars Minor Conventual wear a black tunic with a shoulder cape and a very small cowl or a grey tunic with a shoulder cape and a small cowl. The Friars Minor Observant wear a brown tunic with a rounded collar and a large cowl. There is no habit for the Friars Minor. St. Francis was not very specific. Even during his time, there were many habits. The rule says a tunic, with a cowl and a cord. The rest is left up to the friars to decide. I wear a grey tunic with a cowl, cord and Tau. Some wear a scapular over the tunic. Novices wear a caperone or the Secular Franciscan habit.

The sari of the Missionaries of Charity is beautiful, probably because it’s not European. It’s very easy to identify. Most European habits are very similar.

The great thing about the Franciscan habits for men is that they don’t require any clothes underneath. They are meant to be worn with nothing under them. Since they have no buttons and are very heavy, you just throw them over your boxers and t-shirt and you’re all set to go.

My favorite is the Dominican habit. Having seen the friars doing all sorts of real life activities in it, including playing some pretty darned good basketball…

I submit to you Friar Nick Crowe in his full Dominican Habit…

The white full length belted tunic, with scapular and hooded mantle, then the cappa negra with its hooded mantle over it, and tucked through the belt, the rosary.

When I was a grad student a CUA’s School of Theology, we attended some classes at the Dominican House of Studies. We would refer to the Friar Preachers as The Penguins, because they wear their cappa open, exposing the scapular.

A good friend and I once traded habits for a few minutes. Good gravy! I gained 10 lbs when I put on the Dominican habit. It’s very beautiful, but I was not used to so many pieces. It felt heavy. Though today, they no longer wear the white wool. It’s a rather light weight fabric.

One of my favorite habits is the habit of the de La Salle Christian Brothers. It’s very simple, even more so than the Franciscan habit.

It’s just a tunic with a rabbatta. No belts, crucifixes, rosaries, cowls or other.

I have seen these habits on the “Daily Mass” worn by the priests who officiate on EWTN. They are Franciscans as are Mother Angelica and her nuns.

Could you give me a link to the website of the Order he is from? Finding Dominicans that wear blue capes and not white ones is like pulling teeth. 😃

They are the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word: franciscanmissionaries.com/ They’re a very awesome group that goes on tons of missions constantly. Father Mark Mary (Life On The Rock) goes to World Youth Day every time as a reporter, as well as a handful of other select Friars who hold the camera and such. I love their Habit to death. The golden thing (For the life of me I cannot remember what it’s called) in the middle of it is very beautiful.

Those are the Franciscan Friars of the Eternal Word. They are a diocesan association of the faithful, which is not the same as an order. They follow the Rule of the Friars Minor. Their first formator was a Capuchin Friar Minor, so they took the habit of the Capuchins with two distinctions. Their cowl is very short and they have a monstrance embroidered on the pectoral piece of the habit.

Mother Angelica and her sisters are Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration. These are ot the same Poor Clares founded by St. Francis and St. Clare. The Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration are a French foundation. They took their habit from the Benedictine nuns. They wear a scapular, which is a very Benedictine tradition.

They also have the Knights of the Holy Eucharist down there. This is also a public association of Franciscans. Their habit is very interesting. It’s very close to the original Franciscan habit. It goes down to the knees.

I have wondered what ever happened to the priest that used to be host of Life on the Rock. Seems to me I heard that he left the order to help a widow with a bunch of children.

Not to hijack the thread, but his name was Father Francis, and he was counseling a widow and her family, and over a year he loved her and left the order and Priesthood, unfortunately.

Thanks for the heads up on Father Francis!There are some orders of nuns that just wear ordinary clothes with small lapel pins that tell what order they represent. Springfield Illinois Domicans are one such order. They have decided to dress like ordinary people with no habits. Knocked my socks off the first time I saw some of them! Their clothes are quite conservative but not religious looking at all!
