Interesting, Odd, or "Different" Habits

And there might be a risk of people trying to get into the order just for the habit (strange but true), although they would probably be weeded out fairly quickly. But at a cost because all these things do have a cost.

They are, infact, contemplative nuns. They live in a cloister and if they have to go out (i.e. for medical reasons), they wear a gray habit.
 
The Irish Christian Brothers were originally referred to as The Brothers of the Christian Schools of Ireland before 1964. The early Brothers were trained by the Brothers of the Christian Schools (De La Salle). I was educated by the Irish Christian Brothers and according to the one I asked about the collar, they tried to separate themselves from priests. The old collars used to be preaching tabs, once those were gone, they used a collar with a black piece of stock which usually covered half of the clerical collar. I am referring to the collar which one would insert in a shirt or once which would be worn with a cassock. The Irish Christian Brothers collars were originally made in Liverpool, England until the community stopped staffing the school which was there. The collar doesn’t have a name, nor is it actually “produced” anymore by a company. The Brothers simply use black tape or whatever is laying around to make their collars.

A good friend and I once traded habits for a few minutes. Good gravy! I gained 10 lbs when I put on the Dominican habit. It’s very beautiful, but I was not used to so many pieces. It felt heavy. Though today, they no longer wear the white wool. It’s a rather light weight fabric.

One of my favorite habits is the habit of the de La Salle Christian Brothers. It’s very simple, even more so than the Franciscan habit.

It’s just a tunic with a rabbatta. No belts, crucifixes, rosaries, cowls or other.

St. John Baptist de LaSalle also wrote two books on just the habit–their habit.

Blue Franciscans were popular among those missionaries coming to the New World. They wore blue for the Immaculate Conception.

There are “blue jean” Franciscan friars in the New York/New England region, and the Little Sisters of St. Francis are contemplative but not cloistered in that area as well. They wear blue.
