I have a young Catholic friend who is planning to marry a Ba’hai. He grew up in that faith but his parents only converted when he was a pre-schooler and there is a possibility that he was baptized before they did. I told her to make sure to find out because it certainly makes a difference but, precisely how would that be treated - someone who is baptized but no longer practices the Christian faith??

I think I misunderstood the post when I read it the first time, so let me make sure I understand correctly:

We have a young Catholic woman who knows she is baptized and practices her faith. She is planning to marry a man who was raised in the Ba’hai faith, but whose family was Christian for the first few years of his life. It is unknown whether he was baptized prior to his family’s conversion.

Regardless of whether he was baptized, they will need a dispensation to marry in the church. The question of the baptism will determine which dispensation(s) they will need.

Was his family Catholic or part of some other Christian denomination before they converted to Ba’hai?

Regardless of whether he was baptized, they will need a dispensation to marry in the church. The question of the baptism will determine which dispensation(s) they will need.

They were definitely Christian and I suspect his mother might have been Catholic, not sure about his dad. That’s why I told her to find out so they can present all the facts at the pre-nup.

If he’s baptized non-Catholic it’s canonically a mixed-marriage.
