Interesting story in Galatians

So, I was reviewing Galatians 1-2 today, and I found this little snippet:

But even Titus, who was with me, was not compelled to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. But because of false brethren secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy out our freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage–to them we did not yield submission even for a moment, that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.

Is it just me, or is Paul telling us that some members of the circumcision party looked up Titus’ toga to see if he’d been snipped?

Doubt it - for one thing if they HAD been looking up Titus’ toga then he probably would’ve gotten the snip, as Timothy did, so as not to cause dissension.

But remember, Paul himself remained faithful to the Law though he did not make that requirement of the gentile converts.

No, they simply knew he was a Greek, and in turn knew that he was not circumcised. St. John Chrysostom points out

Therefore they looked round and observed accurately and made themselves busybodies to find out who were uncircumcised;

In other words they were nosy and looked to find non-Jews in order to, as St. John Chrysostom says

And this is what those did, who wished to bring the disciples back to their old servitude.
