I have a wonderful great aunt and uncle who have been married for over 52 years. She has always been Catholic and from my understanding, very devout her whole life. My uncle, on the other hand, was raised Baptist and continued to practice his faith after they married. Their children were raised Catholic. It wasn’t until his children were grown when he decided to convert.
My husband and I are of 2 different denominations. I grew up Church of Christ and he grew up Assemblies of God. We got married in April and decided to find a church that we both agreed on. He is now Catholic (he was confirmed early because of a deployment) and I am still in RCIA.
Communication is definitely key to ANY relationship. I was told that marriage is supposed to help you get to heaven. It if wasn’t for my aunt, my uncle would not have been introduced to the Catholic faith. If it wasn’t for my husband, I would have not considered the Catholic faith. 🙂

Thank you for sharing your story! Welcome to the Catholic community. I’m happy for you and your husband; your great aunt and uncle have a lovely story too. I never thought of it that way, that marriage is supposed to help you get to heaven. Thank you for the thought. May you share more on how you and your husband and your great aunt and uncle overcame those obstacles? I’ve read that it’s very difficult to share an interfaith marriage with a Catholic.

My husband was confirmed in November, so we are still learning together. Which is difficult since he is half way around the world. lol. I emailed him the other day reminding him about Ash Wednesday fasting. haha. Where he is, he isn’t able to attend Mass regularly.
Uncle Bill told me that he wanted to convert because he was tired of going to church alone. lol. He is very involved in the Catholic faith now.

Such a cute story! It’s nice when it’s simple 🙂 Thank you again!

My mother was raised in a mixed protestant household (Lutheran and Baptist). They regularly attended Lutheran services.

My father was raised in a very devout Catholic family, and attended Catholic school k-12.

They dated for just over a year, and when the time came to marry, my grandmother (dad’s mom) just about flipped that her precious son was going to marry a protestant.

Guess who ended up converting…

My mother. The same woman who was raised in a household where she was told that Catholics were devil-worshiping heathens by her extended family is now one of the most devout, selfless, involved women I have ever met in the Church.

Sometimes God brings people into your lives for a reason. My parents were married for 31 years when my father passed away at an unfortunately young age from cancer. Despite their hardships at the end of his life, their faith was STRENGTHENED through his battle.

Thank you for sharing! That’s a lovely story. It’s true what you say when God brings people into our lives for a reason. It’s very nice to know that their faith was strengthened. What brought your mother to convert and what hardships did she face with her protestant family?

To be honest, she started the RCIA process to appease her future mother-in-law 😃 She completed the process and stayed in the church because she realized she was finally in the True Presence of our Lord.

As for her family- well, they all started to realize those “crazy Catholics” weren’t so different than themselves, and that we do indeed worship the same Savior, and you would occasionally find them at Mass with us on holidays, or when I was receiving my sacraments for the first time.

I see 🙂 Thanks. What about your father? How did he feel about his mom’s antagonistic attitude toward your mom’s former faith?

That’s just how gram was. She didn’t sugarcoat things, and you definitely knew when she didn’t approve of something.

To put it in perspective- she was living with us while I was in high school. The night of my prom, I came out to take photos she took one look at me and said “Go change- you look like a beached whale”
