I’ve started reading The Interior Castle, but I’m having trouble retaining and synthesizing what I’m reading (honestly that happens with everything I read lately). Do you know of any helpful secondary sources regarding this great work? Any good talks on it or study guides?

Did you try Wikipedia? Usually references and stuff available.

It’s funny you say this because I’m on class 3 of this series. These talks are from a Franciscan Priest explaining Interior Castle in a simple way. I’m enjoying these, hope you do too.

I strongly. recommend a book on spiritual theology that embraces the Carmelite tradition (Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross) perfectly, as well as many other holy Catholics who have experienced and wrote on the Interior Life of holy grace. The book is on-line - you can download it as a pdf file and read it, mark it up, take notes and so on:
The Three Ways of the Spiritual Life, Fr. R. Garrigou-Lagrange, O.P.:
https://www.ourladyswarriors.org/saints/3ways.htm

This book is dense with holy truth concerning the life of prayer, the life of grace, the life that is to lead us to the threshold of the Beatific Vision.

This book can give you the essential “overview” that will make St. Teresa and any other authentic mystical spiritual writer, intelligible.

A very popular book which seeks to explain the mysticism of St Teresa of Avila along with St John of the Cross is “Fire Within” by Father Thomas Dubay.

The Fire Within by Fr Thomas Dubay is also well worth checking out. It is entirely focused on the Carmelite spirituality of Teresa and John and is written with all the late priest’s gifts of wisdom and grace of expression.
