This is probably a question for my spiritual director, but I forgot to ask him last time we met. I’ve been told that perfect interior silence is one of the absolute greatest ways to listen to God, if not the greatest way. I’m very ADD and get distracted fairly easily even when in Mass and Holy Hour, is there any books or do you y’all have any recommendations on how to achieve this perfect interior silence? I’m sure it’s not easy, but was wondering if there was someone out there that could help. Thanks and God bless.

Practise, practise and some more practise. For some it will only be for a few seconds while for others a bit longer.

Interior silence will come gradually and spontaneously when you’re ready, not earlier. Depending on where you are on your spiritual path, this may be years away, or even decades. To try to “practice” your way to interior silence too early is not a good idea. It will be a frustrating experience, and while you may get some temporary results it won’t be the effortless silence that is the real thing. For now, just pray as much as you can, and your ADD and distractedness will gradually get better. Don’t aim for results such as interior silence; just pray.

I guess I should just be more patient. I’ve made a radical transformation through the grace of God over the past few months and it happened very quickly, I suppose He gave me the graces to make these changes in my schedule/ life and now I have to be patient on other things.

Moment by moment. Breath by breath. Patience is all the strength we need.

Don’t be discouraged. Very distracting thought provides the opportunity to choose to direct your attention back to God in silence.

Next time you pray, ask. Then keep asking as you keep praying.

If you think it impossible, you’ll never attain it.

Nothing is impossible for God & there are too many Saints that testify to it. Still, as been stated, it should not be the aim. Your goal should be to spend time with God. Talk, sing, read, hum… beg, whatever helps you experience God. When He wishes you to be still… He’ll help you to be still.

I’m just repeating what I’ve read, I’ve never experienced perfect stillness or silence.

At the end of several prayer sessions I have experienced stillness & silence. Not perfect. Not very long. But I’m confident He’ll get me there.
