International House of Prayer

Does anyone know anything about the International House of Prayer, their teachings, and their relationship to the Catholic Church? My sister’s son is involved with this group in Kansas City (my sister left the Catholic Church almost 30 years ago when she went off to college) I have the impression that they are into the “end times” and believe that Jesus is returning soon. My fear is that they are anti-Catholic.

I checked out their website. It looks like a mish-mash of end times prophesy, and lots of other stuff all jumbled together.

I frankly couldn’t make sense of it.

Thank you. I’ve had a chance to read only part of it so far, but it is what I wanted. I couldn’t make head nor tail of their web site. Now I know what I’ve got to deal with.

The one thing that caught my eye was that Bickle had a Catholic bible at the beginning of his conversion: there is a Catholic connection somewhere. Fr. Corapi says to never give up on anyone, because if God could do so much with him in his former condition, he can help anyone. Also Fr. Groeschel has said that when you look at anyone, remember that “there but for the grace of God go I”. I feel so helpless in the face of this, and I also know that I’m not as faithful as I should be. I will determine now to give myself more totally to Jesus. God help me.

Very cute! :rolleyes: I would like to know if anyone has any first hand experience with this group. Are they anti-Catholic or tolerant?

Okay, time for seriousness. IHOP is based out of Kansas city, MO. It’s only been around since '99 or '98, but it’s become the public face of the 24/7 Prayer Movement. The 24/7 bills itself as “cross-denominational” but I think that’s a load of bovine scatology. The 24/7 “prayer rooms” are heavily staffed by evangelicals who attempt to snare Catholics.

Personally, I’d stay away from IHOP, as it’s run by Mike Bickel, one of the bigwigs of the charismatic mega-church movement out of KC. He’s a pretty controversial figure with some pretty whack ideas (which I won’t go into here as they are available on the net). While I’ve seen no real evidences he’s anti-catholic, I’ve seen no evidence he’s pro-catholic, either. From a realistic standpoint, one would think he’d be anti catholic as he runs a “charismatic church”, of which he is the focal center. Acknowledging the Primacy of Rome would definitely put a crimp in his style.

I can see how the 24/7 prayer could snare Catholics who might think this is like 24 hr. Eucharistic devotion or like the prayer of monks and nuns in monasteries.

Actually, since there is a strong Catholic Charismatic movement, this is one thing that could attract Catholics from that segment of the Church who aren’t otherwise properly catechized.

Nope, it’s harp and bow sung prayer, evangelical style. It gives me a headache.

Really? Where at? I’m up in st. louis and we’re pretty orthodox up here (unless you get into west county, then it’s all hippy guitar mass type Catholicism)
 
I thank God for the Intl. House of Prayer in Kansas City (IHOP-KC). I had been away from the Catholic Church for over 33 years, leaving around 15 years old. I had got “saved” from a protestant perspective (recommited obviously) in 1985 and started going to protestant churches. Heard about IHOP and went to a few conferences. At the August 2006 IHOP conference they recommended several Roman Catholic books on prayer. Mike Bickle himself mentioned attending a few Charismatic Catholic conferences. I picked up Father Dubay’s book “Fire Within” about St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross. After the funeral of John Paul II in which I wept while I watched it on TV, I felt being led back home to RCC. But after I started reading this book recommended by IHOP I was led to further explore the possibility. Now my wife (protestant) is having her 2 previous marriages annulled and I am well on my way to full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. I am now applying to be on staff at IHOP and be a voice for unity in the body of Christ as our separated brethren - one faith one baptism - and my fellow Catholics are led by the Holy Spirit to pray and worship the Lord like never before - praying for our Bridegroom King to return and heal the nations.

I stumbled across this link on the internet. I’d like to respond quickly, briefly, because I’m an “IHOPer.”

First of all, we are not against Catholics. Bickle got saved through a Catholic priest when he was 15 years old. Catholics have been some of the most praying groups of people throughout the last 2000 years, even until today. We sell books in the IHOP bookstore written by Catholics. In fact, many people comment on how Catholic we are. But we’re not Catholic. We’re IHOP.

I encourage you to actually go to the web-site: www.IHOP.org and see for yourself. Moves of God are rarely accepted in “real time” but years later they are. IHOP began in 1983 when Bickle moved back to Kansas City. That’s when the prophets gathered and IHOP was prophesied in a very dramatic way. Bickle was faithful to do prayer meetings every day from 1983 until 1999 until they actually launched it 24/7. Many people, many young people, have given up their dreams to give God all they have. People are giving a lot of money to God, and their time, the best years of their life. So be careful before you criticize it. Bickle encourages people to go to wherever God is calling them. Most people only stay a short time (1-2 years).

IHOP is now being broadcast on international GOD TV which goes into potentially over 100 million homes.

Bickle is one of the most holy, righteous people I’ve ever known. He’s absolutely laid down his life and given God all he could. He makes millions but lives in a duplex. He’s never looked at porn (which is rare in this day in age). He weeps in gratitude over how good God has been to him. And his favorite message is that God is a faithful Bridegroom to us and likes us and he also has great messages on meekness, and loving and blessing our enemies. Be careful that you don’t miss out on a blessing by writing off IHOP. It’s easy to be critical but I encourage you to visit for yourself. We’re on Red Bridge Road in South Kansas City just west of 71 Highway.

Oh, and one more thing. Each December, at the end of the year, Bickle and IHOP throw a FREE youth conference for over 15,000 youth where we bring in the new year with worship and singing and glorifying Jesus. And another thing, there is an incredible amount of humility in the IHOP leadership.

We have a Bible School, a Music Academy… and Lou Engle has recently moved his ministry here. Lou Engle runs The Call which is a prayer movement of fasting and praying for America to be saved, to turn back to God, to end abortion, increase righteousness, get good government leaders etc. etc. In 1999 they had a prayer meeting at The Mall in D.C. with over 400,000 people to fast and pray for the day.

I visited IHOP house of prayer in KC this fall, and I stay there for 20 days. I only can say that is a AWESOME place.
I can feel God’s PRESENCE so strong there.
I have one thought, I really do not care about the label “Catholic”
or the label “Protestant”, as long as it is truth from God, I will embrace the truth,
in my protestant church , we read a book called " the practice of the presence of GOD by Brother Lawrence,
we also read books by Madame Guyon. I know both of them are catholic brother and sister, but nowadays,
in protestant church, we devote on the teaching of these two precious body of Christ. actually the writer of these books is Holy Sprit.
The 24/7 prayer movement is inspired by Holy Spirit and guide by Holy Spirit. IHOP pastors often refer to a 24/7 prayers movement which
happened century ago - Moravian Brethren’s prayer movement. when I read the book regarding to what Moravian brethren had accomplished.
I just feel so exciting. please go to visit IHOP-KC , when we see people pray day and night with such zeal and fire, our prayer life will be changed.

I’d just like to give my opinion having experienced similiar churches and “styles of worship” (for lack of a better term)

I’m always a bit suspicious of these churches that rely heavily on corporate formula, the use of acronyms, slogans, catch phrases, and popular rock music to attract followers. It just raises the commercial red flag for me. It appears similiar to any corporate gathering, stirring up emotions and group-think. There’s a undignified quality about it.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t really think there is anything sinister about these churches (?) 🤷 , I believe their intentions are to do good, there just something misguided about these pastors and followers that bothers me. I compare it to a “get rich quick” consumer mentality that so many Americans have fallen victim to.

I speak from my own experience when I say that every one of these churches I’ve attended (a few) they’ve wanted something from me, be it money, time, work or my complete acceptance to their philosophy. My telling them that I’m Catholic is met with sympathy and concern. Questioning the faith is met with patronizing explanations, or they just turn me off.

In comparison, the Catholic church I know, has never tried to coerce me into giving up my personal information. I’ve never felt that the Catholic Church was run like a company or country club.

Yeah… The CC asks for money, but they do it in a pathetic guilt-ridden way, pointing at the leaking roof or creaking pews. Yeah, the CC ask me to do things, like pass around the basket occasionally, or help BBQ for the parish picnic. Or they want my kids to serve mass constantly because there aren’t enough servers… But you know, I can always say “no” and they’d still let me stay for mass… that’s the difference.

These charismatic churches seem like a good thing, But I question this “presence of God” they all speak about. It’s just way too simple for that to work for me.

I have a lot to say about this issue, but not now.🙂
 
I have a few acquaintences who are involved with IHOP in the Kansas City Area, they are members of the Community of Christ, formerly “Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints”.

They became involved due to the stress on prophesy and the role of prophets…also it’s proximity to Independence, where they believe Zion will be established in the last days.

It’s all a bit strange to me…but it has given them a purpose and it has “strengthened their faith” they’ve claimed.

I am just another Ruthmary…my daughter, son-in-law, and three children, who just suffered through the debacle of a lost job, foreclosure, and other such heartaches are on their way to IHOP…unfortunately, not the pancake house.

I was so encouraged by “hebledsoforme” and “servant119b”, thank you folks!!

By way of introduction (this is my first post here), I am a cradle-Catholic, then out and about from about 1975 until July 13, 1996…when I became what I would really call “Born Again!” :cool: I prayed for Truth…I was so confused…esp when people I was worshipping with attacked the CC for no reason at all…the Hore of Babylon, the lifeless church down the road…etc…I was :confused:

What really brought me back of course was HIS GRACE AND MERCY… with a good dose of His smacking me across the head with Catholic Answers…He gave me the grace to listen, read, and re-learn my faith and then obey. My wife has never “re-verted”, and the children are all, as you can see…out there with the Lord in the desert…like some of the Early Fathers…Anthony, Francis etc… BUT, they are with Our GOD, the ONE God, the God of Our Fathers, and they worship and praise this One God, in, and with, and through His Holy Trinity…SOOOO, I just keep praying for a happy ending…

I have one daughter who is a missionary in Africa…want to see??

This daughter on her way to Kansas City to do the IHOP 🙂 has been an assistant pastor at two churches in Colorado…REZ…and PowerMinistries…she, and hubby are bubbles for the Lord…they just keep on singing and praising and praying…(all those piano, guitar, etc lessons did come in handy for the Lord 🙂 and now they want a deeper sea…my God, foreclosure, loss of jobs, and they want a deeper sea… I dunno, these kids now a days…(ever hear those words before???)

My last daughter is here on Maui with me…(my wife is in Africa with my youngest…should be home in May…I hope:eek: )… and is on fire with the Lord, and her hubby, and two kids…they were all in an awesome Easter production at their church, The King’s Cathedral… kingscathedral.com/cathedral_maui.php

Anywhos, I guess this is for RuthMary…Pray. He will enfold yours in the precious Palms of His Hands…and make sure that they don’t fall through the nail holes…He loves you, and I think they will be just fine. Yes, the Lord said something like, “I have come to cause a division, mother against daughter, son against father etc… but you know what, if you look at in through the eyes of Love, Truth, in other words, Jesus’ eyes…maybe He is just saying, again, and again…'Love one another, as I have loved you…and you will conquer through love and non-resistance, any and all divisions.” Did He get all flustered when He saw people healing people in His Name that were not part of His Division?? The disciples were all bonkers…hey, not Jesus…he was triple cool :cool: (no pun intended, Dear Lord…Your Blessed Trinity IS…I AM…thank YOU Jesus!!) His only comment was, I think…correct me if I am wrong, I am paraphrasing… pray then, that they too will see the Light, and be with us…

Amazing how people are lamenting the fact that their family member are seeking the Lord, in serious prayer movements, etc! I guess it would be better if they were living like the Devil all week but at Mass every Sunday right?
