I was thinking…I wonder if negative interactions with anonymous people on the internet be considered grave matter? After all, it’s not like you know the people. Is the interaction merely words being typed in response to other words, or is it more then that?

I think mainly the sin of pride is very present on a lot of message boards, and a lot of other underlying sin, etc. But as far as the actual interactions themselves seem to be relatively harmless.

HI. 🙂
The internet words may be anonymous but there are persons at the other end, at their PC’s or laptops…and what we say can trigger responses harmful to them, or we can inspire and encourage them, even help to give them hope to continue their life. It’s irrelevant whether or not we know them. Each person deserves consideration. Jesus didn’t put limits on 'love others as yourself" Consider whether certain comments or responses wouldn’t trigger emotions of hurt or anger in you! Others are just as human as you are.

As regards pride, it’s presumptuous to judge anyone. People may seem to you to have pride, however, subsequent posters are trying, as requested, to encourage and even inspire the OP and others with similar questions or problems. Subsequent posters may be responding to the question in the best way they can, and even with examples…which to you could seem prideful…but are intended to make the other person feel less isolated or to help illustrate a possible resolution. And when people answer questions that are asked, they cannot just fluff around. They need to give the best answer they can, or what use is it for the person to even ask the question. If they give the answer that is needed, it’s not pride. It is helping others the way they ask to be helped.

Sometimes compassion is what is most needed, sometimes common-sense, sometimes facts, sometimes just a sharing of like experiences so that the person feels less alone, and even less strange, and sometimes because they need the quotes from Scripture, the Catechism, Canon Law, and they don’t realise these are in fact available in full online, and sometimes they just want encouragement/ prayer. It isn’t pride for responding posters to do what they can to help. It’s charity, if you wish, which Jesus demands of us, it’s human kindness. Would it be the case that pride is more evident in those who stand aside and judge those who come here to help others as many of us do?

No person is anonymous, each person is a whole world in themselves, as are you also. God bless you. 🙂

Thanks for the good points. The ‘pride’ I was referring to was this IT board I go to quite often where things can get pretty ugly. My immaturity really shines through sometimes when people rub me the wrong way.

I find the “preview” feature to be very useful in eliminating my own personal nastiness. You can type whatever pops into your mind, preview it, and then edit for charity. Works every time. You get to see your devastatingly clever retort on the screen before you dump it - what could be better? 😉

I think you have to police yourself. If a particular site or message board brings out the worst in you and its bothering you this much, its time to avoid that site or board. I know in the past I had to police myself or I found too much of the negativity of certain sites would spill over into my real life too much. At least you’ve recognized there is a problem, you can do something about it now.
