Hi all,

Can anybody suggest a solid Internet filtering software? I am struggling mightily against using the Internet to view pornography. This is such a battle because it is SO immediate…within 5 seconds flat, you have porn.

Got rid of the DVD’s, the magazines, but this is my downfall and the thorn in my flesh.

I want to get software that will block porn, and have my wife install it set the password and keep it from me.

Thanks

It worked for me. But, if you really need help, get a good friend in Christ to help you. I had my girlfriend… a filter is not enough.

Good luck! I pray for chastity everyday and I’m sure you’re included in those prayers 🙂

Something geeky but still kinda works is to add all the bad sites you know of into your hosts file to go to the wrong address. The hosts file(for windows) is in windows/system32/drivers/etc

all you did is enter
badsite.com 192.168.0.0

then… when you try to later go to badsite.com is will be blank. You can probably learn more about the hosts file on google.com I block a TOOOOON of stuff

What about talking to a good Catholic Christian man in your parish and having him become your accountablilty partner? That way, you can call him and talk to him whenever you are tempted, and he can talk to you and pray with/for you so you do not fall into sin. Having a brother in Christ that you are accountable to is probably a better help to you than any filter (or even getting rid of your computer altogether!).

Try safe eyes or covenant eyes - if you slip up then it emails or texts your accountability partner - it worked for me - I had my wife as a partner!

how does such filter work? if it blocks certain words like “sex”, it will also prevent you from entering many christian sites 🙂

I too had a struggle with this. I prayed a lot and actually was helped by playing on-line games believe it or not. Whenever I booted up the computer, I was more anxious to play a game than to surf porn.

It also helped that we had to move our computer into a more common area since what was previously our office became our first baby’s room. Not sure if that is practical for you.

Confess and pray and focus on something else – some sort of hobby or better form of entertainment.

The filter will help, but you have to kill the urge otherwise when it hits you will find a way around any blocks.

I found this link to a 2007 Internet Filter Review for you at www.pornnomore.com, a site run by the Serenellians. God bless you and good luck, Bill.
www.pornnomore.com is an awesome site, and somehow from there I ended up with this program called Wisechoice.

I’ve used it for like 3 or 4 months now. It costs $5 a month and it is very customizable. That is, there is a list that you set at the beginning and you can customize it to block religious cult sites, edit things you can search for on search engines, all kinds of things. Of course, the basic block pornography, that’s standard.

It can even be customized to block gambling sites, eharmony type sites, chat sites (for protecting children online) and more. Here’s a list about that.

As an added bonus, you can set up the account so that your internet usage and searching is emailed to an accountability partner. **It still blocks what it needs to block, but you have the added benefit of somebody else knowing what you do and try to do on the internet. **

And yes, it does block pop-ups. Pop Ups that I’ve never seen before, well…it blocked them so I never saw them. Where did they come from??? I don’t know, but it blocked them!!

I can’t sing it’s praises enough. And if you try to delete it, well, it locks up your PC and you have to call the company and probably talk to some sweet innocent lady and request help. I don’t want to have to make that phone call :o

Oh, and it keeps getting updated with the sites that they find and people report and all in all it’s a good program I think.

Thanks for all of your replies.

I have just started using SafeEyes - great stuff - nothing gets through!

Although it is causing problems with my antivirus software…the software keeps telling me I need to renew my subscription for updates when I still have about 8 months left on it…

The trick with using these filtering tools succesfully is not knowing the password. That means you must have a trusted friend ro spouse be the holder of the administrator password. Otherwise, in a moment of weakness, you will just enter the passward and disable the software.

The fun thing about wisechoice is there is no password! At least not with the option I got. The only way to turn it off that I’m aware of is to call the company and request an uninstall password. There again, you’re probably gonna talk to a sweet innocent lady and she’s gonna ask “so why are you wanting to discontinue using the software?” Like it’s any of their business why, but still…it’s a deterrent.

Rob - many thanks just uninstalled safe eyes and installed wisechoice instead - great idea having no passwords etc - thanks for your posts!

Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas for Monday!

dads.org has a filter that you can buy. I hear it is good. Remember though that it is not enough just to avoid sin- you must work to increase the virtue that corresponds with that sin. Find a good confessor- he will be able to help you.

Keep the computer in a place where other people are likely to go. Make a friend (this helps as it gets you to think about others more and yourself less). Exercize, and make sure you are eating and sleeping properly. Get involved in an organization at church like the Knights of Columbus. If you have time to spend, consider volunteering somewhere- when you give to others you think of yourself (which is what porn is) less. And most importantly, pray for God’s grace to overcome this sin- keep a good prayer life through reading scripture and praying the devotions of the Church- and through your own personal prayer as well.
Be careful of any free software. The makers of it have to pay for it somehow, and good things almost always cost money- or requre lots of ads (this means pop-ups and spyware on your computer if you don’t have to pay for it).

So they hold the password. That makes it interesting. I have been having a lot of trouble with the one I use (Content Protect). and would like to replace it.

I myself struggled with this same problem; it nearly destroyed my marriage. I found that standard filtering software was too restrictive; sites that had nothing to do with pornography were still being blocked. Now I use Covenant Eyes, which has an awesome deterrent: every single website you visit is logged, and e-mailed to an accountability partner. So you can go anywhere you want, but if it’s bad, your partner will know about it.

Think of it as a high-tech version of Santa’s list; your partner will know if you’ve been bad or good, which makes it very easy to want to be good. I’ve had no issues since installing it.
