We found that our teenage son ahs been downloading porn and this is his second strike.
Besides any other advice anyone can offer I’m wondering if any of you use internet filters, which ones and how effective you think they are.

thanks,
didymus

i don’t know much about internet filters…but i sure would like to! these pop-ups are driving me nuts!!!

we’re praying for your son.

One thing that can help is using the password function in internet explorer (Tools to Internet Options, click the Content Tab, use that function).

My suggestion: take away his computer, and allow him the use of a computer that is in plain view. Password protect all accounts so he can’t use them when you don’t want him to. More importantly though, make him realize that how severe pornography is. However, you also have to be supportive because it is a very difficult habit to break.

Trend Micro PC-Cillin is great for viruses and spyware.

Change your ISP to Safebrowse.com. We have been using it for 5 years now. Porn and such is automatically blocked and you are given many choices of what you would liked blocked. They also include e-mail protection.

I"ve tried two lately. Neither is perfect.

BeSafe (www.bsafe.com) has a very good content filter. In fact, it’s a little overboard sometime…calls some things illicit that aren’t. Also, if something should ever slip through, you can report the site and it will be blocked within a day. They have a suite of products including internet content filter, antivirus, anti-spam, pop up blocker. The internet filter is the best. I’ve had problems with their antivirus program not always working.

Cybersitter is good for monitoring Instant Message conversations. I’ve had less experience with their internet content filters, so can’t say how well it works. But the IM tracker is pretty slick.

Have you considered speaking to your local public library? (You wouldn’t of course, need to go into why). They usually have this information. Even if they do not use filtering themselves, the librarian who works with the computers will probably have several suggestions.
In the meantime, what I have done is to go to “tools”, & click on internet options. You can set it up so that you are in control of the content. Also, set it up so that your son has his own password to get online. By doing this, you will have some degree of control immediately.
God bless.

Most libraries have internet access, perhaps a radical solution is to eliminate the internet at home and use the internet at the library. Putting the internet connection in a public place in the home, as suggested above is another good idea.

Praying for your son.

We had this problem 2 years ago. We are now using the “netmop” filter: www.netmop.com ! The filter cannot be circumvented or uninstalled, it protects children and adults !

Somehow I doubt that. Any filter can be circumvented, especially if the person has physical access to the machine.

No filter will get rid of all smut. Statistics guarantees us that any filter with a low Type II error will have a high Type I error. Any filter that gets rid of a high percentage of porn will also filter out a lot of good stuff. Any filter that gets rid of very little good stuff will miss a lot of bad stuff.

Is there any way you can put Parental Controls on his account? I know AOL has good ones. That way he’ll be denied access to those types of sites.

Also it’s important to make sure he understands why pornography is wrong- how much is degrades women, causes lust, the whole nine yards.

And the idea Eamon had, about keeping the computer in plain view, has worked for a lot of families I know.

Good luck! You & your son are in my prayers. :blessyou:

Also, you can use Proxy avoidance to get whatever content you want. sites like the-cloak.com will allow you to view webpages over an encrypted Proxy, basically rendering the Internet Filtering software to nothing more than a minor inconvience.

Also, porn is readily available via P2P networks such as Kazaa, Limewire, etc.

Its also possible to beat the system using Google.com/Images search. It will bring up porn from websites in other languages and sometimes the internet filter doesn’t catch it.

Best possible solution is having the computer in plain view, with his own limited account and password where he can’t install anything or more importantly, uninstall anything. Then setup your internet filter to block porn, and also, block proxy avoidance sites.

This won’t help a lot as I don’t have the step-bystep instructions, but my husband programed his mothers computer so the internet can only be accessed without a password at certain times of the day. He did this when his mom and the same issues with his brother. That way, no one without a password can get on the Internet, so no more worries when you’re not home.

It sounds difficult but it’s not. Go to the Kim Komando site www.komando.com and do a search for the instrustions. That’s where we found it.

I installed netmop filter on my sons laptop and it works very well.

And where can I get it, how can I install it, and make sure my teen boys cannot remove it???

Please help. BTW, if we use a router from our main computer to a laptop, will it work on the laptop as well??

Thank you

Bringing this up because I need some fast assistance here.

Please help with THE best Christian internet filter~~

Do I install it on our main computer and will it then automatically run on my son’s laptop too?

He’s a computer wizard, and we need to protect our family from all the rotten stuff out there!!

Thank you.

If he is downloading it off a p2p(filesharing) network like kazaa or gnuttella lite theres no way of blocking the adult files. If he is downloading from a browser you can use “Netnanny” (google it).

I use a firewall called Zone Alarm. It can be password protected. One of the features is a type of control where you can block different categories. I can’t believe it’s full-proof, but it’d be one more step in making it difficult.

There is also another thing I’ve done in the past that you may want to consider. I had a suspicion that my computer was being used for nefarious purposes. I did a google search and found a free program that would monitor my computer. Basically it ran in the background and took a snapshot of the screen every 30 seconds along w/ recording every keystroke.

Now that I think of it, I think the first 30 days were free and you had to pay to unlock it after that.

But you could find something like that, let your son know what it is and what it does and that should be a deterrent.

Good luck!
