I look at a friend’s profile on facebook, someone I’m attracted to, they have some new pictures, I look at their pictures, I notice I am becoming aroused, I continue to look at one more picture before I stop.

Assuming there’s nothing immodest or pornographic about the pictures, is this a mortal sin? I’ve chosen to continue after I’m aware, so there is full awareness and consent of the will, the only question then - is it grave matter?

I have been told in the past that all sins against the 6th and 9th commandment are grave matter. Is that correct?

I’m well aware it’s a sin, and am resolved never to do so again, just wondering whether confession is necessary before I next receive the Blessed Sacrament.

It is natural to become aroused at some level when looking at or talking to someone you are attracted to. The problem is that once the arousal mechanism kicks in, it can be very difficult to bring it to a stop, especially when you are young. It’s kind of like a big heavy car going down a steep hill with bad brakes. The only thing that will bring it to a stop is the brick wall (sexual sin) at the bottom of the hill. I have hit that wall many times myself my friend and I am not proud of it.

My suggestion is for you to avoid deliberately looking at anything that will cause you to misbehave. Don’t expect that you will always be perfect, but you must try to do the best you can. God knows your heart.
