Could someone please give some insight into what this Bible verse means?
MT 8:20 Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.

A long shot, but perhaps Jesus means that whilst everything earthly has its place on earth, because He is not of this earth, (Jn 18:36 “My kingdom is not of this world”) he has no recognisable resting place, because his is with the father? Or maybe it follows the idea that Jesus was to be rejected wherever he went, most noticeably by the jewish authorities culminating in his passion. In this light it can be seen as a prophecy maybe. I don’t know, I’m struggling to word this correctly, haha. Hope it helps, or at least develops your ideas

Ver. 20. By the fox is meant craft and cunning, by the birds pride. Thus then our blessed Lord answered him; pride and deceit dwell in your heart, but you have left no place for the Son of Man to rest his head, who can rest only in the meek and humble. St. Augustine — Jesus Christ rejected this scribe, because he wished to follow Jesus rather through the desire of glory and wealth, hoping to be great in his kingdom, than with the design of perfecting himself in virtue; so that our Saviour answers him: You cannot expect riches from me; who am poorer than the beasts of the field, or birds of the air; they have a place of rest, whereas I have none. Mat 8:20 - The Son of man - The expression is borrowed from Dan_7:13, and is the appellation which Christ generally gives himself: which he seems to do out of humility, as having some relation to his mean appearance in this world. Hath not where to lay his head - Therefore do not follow me from any view of temporal advantage.

“Foxes, birds, and every kind of animal have homes to sleep in, but me and my disciples are tramping around Israel and nobody’s invited us to stay with 'em tonight. Hint, hint.”

Sigh. “Okay, boys, we’re camping out tonight.”

Seriously, look at the context of the passage. The scribe says he’ll follow Jesus wherever – to the ends of the earth! And Jesus says, “It’s very nice that you say that, but I’m telling you, it’s not easy to follow me. For example, if you follow me, you’re going to sleep rough tonight, not in the palace of the King of the Jews.” And this despite all the love and adoration of the crowd!

Btw, it appears from the order of the story that Jesus slept on a boat that night, and the disciples got to experience the joy of nasty weather and waves. Although that probably was supposed to have happened a different day, and they’re just connected stories. “And I remember this one time, after the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus did this… and I remember another time, about that same time, Jesus did this…”

This indicated that Jesus and his followers were being persecuted by the Jews of that period in Jerusalem, so he prophesized that he shall have to migrate, like Moses and Muhammad, to some peaceful place where JesusYeshuaIssa would be respected and allowed to spread message from GodAllahYHWH among the masses.
This actually happened, after the event of Crucifixion when GodAllahYHWH saved his life and he was delivered from the Cross in a neardad position and treated in the tomb where he was laid, he went to Galilee from where he alongwith his mother Mary he set off in search of ten lost tribes of house of Israel who were spread upto Kashmir, India. He died a respectful and natural death among his own people there, and the prophecy was fullfilled.

i think that the story you are quoting is from the koran and not found in our bibles.

we, Christians, believe that Jesus was crucified and rose again from the dead. as Christians wrote the bible then it makes sense that they believed in his resurrection and therefore aren’t referring to him hiding away after his death.

it is interesting that muslims have stories about jesus, though.

Good Post. The Haydock commentary is quite inciteful. Some of the followers of Jesus wanted to attach themselves to his ministry thru pride and " wanting to be somebody “. Its quite human to want to be part of something important. Like the groupies in modern entertainment. Jesus words are highlighting the difficulty of the Christian Life. Its certainly NOT the " health and wealth Gospel " He is creating in their midst! The Way is difficult indeed. For me, there is even a taste of loneliness in these beautiful words… " Son of Man” can also be translated " the Human One " from the Greek. How Human it is indeed to have no home to rest your head… even the birds have nests it seems. This would emphasize our utter dependance on the Father. The things of this workd are not our true home.
