Interpretting an article on discipline

Hey Filmmy,
I would say there is nothing untrue in that; it’s sort of universal natural knowledge.

But the Saints offer us so much more in the way of information, why do you not read them? With God’s help, we can do so much more! Additionally, with the concept of offering things up, we have another very ppwerful way of “motivating” ourselves.

This secular stuff is very superficial, but what the Church teaches is very profound. It’s like the difference between putting a brace on someone’s deformed leg and performing an operation to fix the deformity.

Haha, I wish there was someone Catholic I could talk to in person… It it likely that I have fallen into error over time, and as this is likely the case, it would take a little while to work it all out.

“I would say there is nothing untrue in that; it’s sort of universal natural knowledge.”

And this is good to hear. At least it seems to be small step in the right direction…

i would actually disagree, i read the article and it’s rather erroneous in what it says,

first of all, discipline is not an illusion, it does exist, it’s what we Catholics call mortification, and which Jesus told us to do if we wish to be His disciples, He said “deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow me”
for a good article explaining mortification, read this - gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=13047443

what this type of discipline is good for is, mainly, having control of our own will, so that we can avoid sin and be more pleasing to God, because after all, what good is your free will if you can’t use it?

it also says “Discipline is tough because whatever the task or habit you’re trying to do is tough.”
not true, maybe in some cases yes, but ultimately it’s because we lack the perseverance and proper discipline needed to have control of ourselves,
although the method suggested can surely work, but it’s not the only means, and doesn’t really give you control of yourself in everything,
and besides that, some people can have just as much of a hard time with something that’s easy to do, simply because they are lazy, and it’s true that that is partly from lack of motivation, but it is also largely from lack of discipline,

there are points in that article that are true and points that are false, and i would just recommend not bothering with it, instead, try some of the helpful articles and other things on these sites -

Thank you. I knew there was more than meets the eye. Modern philosophy these days is downright scary.
