Interrupting The Mass

During Mass tonight the priest lead the homily into a discussion of one of the nuns who was leaving the parish. He then started talking about her in some detail and interrupted the Mass to call her up to the sanctuary. He had everyone extend their hands to give her a blessing as he laid hands on her, and there were rounds of applause and everyone stood, etc. He gave her a gift in front of the congregation and this all last maybe 10-15 minutes. I found this to be an abuse. It’s nice and all, but I personally don’t care how sweet or sentimental something is if it results in derailing the Mass itself. Not to mention, they were having a celebration after Mass in the parish school cafeteria (food, wine, etc.) so I don’t get why a priest would halt the Mass for something that he could have celebrated after Mass. It just… pisses me off. Not to mention there was a bit of paraphrasing, he used his own words for the prayer over the gifts, they used a different line than the one about Peter before the Gospel reading, he used his own words for the part initiating the Our Father, and paraphrased the “This is the Lamb of God…” part.

Pray for me that I don’t explode, because to top it all off I swear I heard someone mock me for the way I dress at the end of Mass!

I agree. This kind of abuse has happended at my church as well. The homily is not an interuption in the mass, but a part of it ment to explain the gospel. I cant wait till i am able to get myself to an EF parish where this kind of thing is almost a non-issue.

I agree that the gift presentation and discussion about the sister could have taken place during the refreshment time. That would make the most sense.

You can pray for the priest and for how to go about handling the abuses. It won’t help if you get angry and lose your peace about it.

Don’t feel bad. I had a co-worker ask if I joined “some weird religion” I said no. He said, “well you dress like a nun” I was shocked. Then he proceeded to make a big deal out of it to other co-workers and they were laughing. Then my boss said I couldn’t wear my triangle head scarfs anymore. It’s “against the dress code” unless your religion requires it. I tried to explain this was a personal piety decision and was shot down. So I know the feeling on getting made fun of because of how I dress.
