Interruptions in Mass?

During my pastors homily one Sunday a child was apparently misbehaving in the pew, his father picked him up and draped him over his sholder and began to make his way to the doors. The child began to scream at the top of his lungs, “NO NO I’LL BE GOOD, I’LL BE GOOD” over and over again all the way out of the church. The pastor who had stopped speaking during all of this, after everyone turned back around to look at him, said, “Well, I guess we have all been there.” That brought down the house.

This reminds me of a story our parish Priest once told. He said he was at the cathedral with the Bishop and a few other Priests, and I guess they were about to celebrate Mass or something, but they were sitting down and this younger child started misbehaving and wouldn’t stop. His parents escorted him out, obviously about to give him some discipline, and right before he walked through the door he turned back to the whole Church and yelled “Pray for me!”

During a weekday Mass, when the priest was preparing for the consecration, he suddenly held up the large wafer and said, “Somebody has a sense of humor - this thing is plastic!”

Two Interruptions I dislike during Mass are unnecessary clapping applause and laughing.

I love humor. But some things are just not funny.

And the priest didn’t really need to interrupt the holiest part of the Mass to point it out. He could have simply went to get another one silently or used one of the other hosts already there. Completely unnecessary and a horrible disruption during the most sacred prayers known to man.

One Sunday I was at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in Memphis, TN, and there was a power cut early in the Mass. The celebrant just continued with the Mass. And the lights came back on during the Consecration-- exactly at the moment of the Elevation of the Host.

It wasn’t during the Consecration (yes, that would be absolutely horrible! ). It was just after the Liturgy of the Word.

Not nearly as bad, but still completely un-necessary and a pointless distraction that shouldn’t have happened.

Here’s another ‘interruption’ from another parish…

We had just begun offering an early morning Sunday Mass, and I was Father’s regular server for the first few months. I admit, there were a few times when that early time was difficult enough to get out of bed and be physically present, never mind being mentally present. Apparently, Fr. was having similar difficulty. We came to the Creed one Sunday morning, when Fr. lost his place - he couldn’t get the words for the next phrase in the Creed. I froze - I was following him. With both of us red-faced, Fr. just smiled and said, “I think God will forgive us if we just move on…” and the Creed was not finished that Sunday. (We remembered every Sunday after to pay attention to what we were praying!)
