I thought introduction of Canon Law 1917 meant auto excommunication was no longer possible?

There are eight latae sentenciae excommunications in the 1983 CIC, none in the eastern canon law CCEO, and in the 1917 CIC there were forty.

See: http://www.traditioninaction.org/Questions/F062_Excom.htm

1917 CIC
  • Those who contract marriage before a non-Catholic minister without permission (2319 § 1 n. 1);
  • Those who contract marriage with an implicit or explicit agreement of educating the offspring outside of the Catholic Church (ibid. n. 2);
Also I found this from H.H. Pope Paul VI, from March 18, 1966, effective May 19, 1966, not 1977 as posted before. I will remove the date in the prior post.

VII. - The excommunication prescribed by canon 2319 §1, 1° for those who celebrate a marriage before a non-Catholic minister is abrogated. The effects of this abrogation are retroactive.

Fair enough, though it would not appear to be a sentence particularly aimed at the remarried.
