Into Great Silence

I am in the process of purchasing the movie/documentary. Just wanted to know if any of you have already seen it… What is your opinion? Its okay if you talk about it in detail, as for me, I was never the one to be upset when the story was out.

I have used the film for almost a year now - I bought the german dvd on amazon.de. I put in on when I have some free hours and just let it go, over and over again. It it like moving the Chartreuse into your house. Wonderful. How easy God makes it for us sometimes.

This is on my eBay search list!! I am waiting till we both get paid to buy the two DVD version - I can hardly wait to see this movie!!! We were supposed to go see it in the theater when it came out last year but we were all extremely tired and just didn’t make it that night, then it left the area.

I hope to get it soon - really really want to see this one!!

I found it interesting but kind of long.

The blind monk had some great insight at the end of the film. Too bad we weren’t offered just a bit more of that.

I was very moved. SAw it with my son who is a hedonist and was also moved. It affected my time at the abbey in Illinois and helped me to see how fake they were. I will buy this also.

I think it’s an incredible work of art, more of a meditation than a movie. I to back and watch it (or parts of it) often. Indescribable.

My perspective (probably a little different that those already posted):

First, Into Great Silence is totally worth owning.

I saw it in the theatre and, in terms of movie-watching, it takes a bit of work to watch because it is almost three hours of …silence (which was my favorite aspect of the film.)

I’ve visited contemplative monasteries (Benedictine) and I was rather disappointed that the film-maker never showed a continuous day in the life of the monks and that he showed so very little of the Divine Office. I really would have liked to get a better sense of the rhythm of the day and of the liturgy.

On the other hand, the reception of the new candidates was awesome and awesomer still were the meditative passages of Scripture interspersed throughout the film.

The life depicted is very harsh, but I knew before I saw this movie that I’m not called to be a hermit (a contemplative maybe, but a hermit, no way!)

I wish they had explained everything in the first half of the movie, and then gone into the silence.

I wish they had explained the different parts of the room, the different jobs of the monks, the ages of the monks, the different languages they spoke when praying and why, the history of the monastery, the way they made a living, the rules of the order, the schedule of the day, the traditions for different parts of the day, the different private prayers, the reason for that one little light in the Chapel, What does the blind monk do? How do people even find out about that monastery? Who is that man who helped the monk with the haircuts? Why do they wear lay clothes under their habit? How do the new monks learn all this?etc… I had so many questions that weren’t answered.

If they had explained everything and then shown the silence, I would have gotten so much more out of it. I would have understood why and then I could have just enjoyed it instead of trying to figure it out. Just my opinion.
