Introduction to Marian Devotion

I’m new on the Catholic Faith and wish to develop a stronger devotion to the Blessed Virgin.
Which books would you recomend? Any advices on spiritual exercises would be welcome.
I’ve been praying the Rosary since my conversion and it has helped a lot.

The Rosary is a wonderful way to develop devotion to Our Lady! Other devotions would be the brown scapular, first Saturdays, probably others I’m not thinking of…

As for books - my goodness, where do I start and how do I not overwhelm you! I’ll put it this way: go for what appeals to you. My brother likes Marian apparitions, so he used a book about those. I prefer the writings of saints, so I grew closer to her through them, by reading about how they understood her and honor her. My mother likes Father Mitch Pacwa, so naturally she has one of his books about Mary.

Honestly, the very best thing apart from the Rosary that helped me was spending time with a friend who has a strong Marian devotion. The way I refer to her as “Our Lady” is respectful and I hope loving, but it’s nothing to the love in this friend’s voice when he says “Our Mother Mary.” Even just a little thing like that impacted my own spiritual life.

Yes, the daily Rosary and the First Saturday devotions will definitely draw you much, much closer to Mary. I’d also make a point of celebrating the big Marian feasts–there are plenty to punctuate the year–and now we have a brand new one, Mary Mother of the Church, just instituted by Pope Francis.

I’ve found that my devotion to St. Joseph also draws me to Mary, and Mary draws me to Jesus. Funny how that really works 🙂

Unfortunately I can’t practise this devotion as I have not yet received my first communion, but I’ Looking foward to do it in the future. 🙂

I’m also a big fan of the writings of the saints, especially the Church Fathers. Any particular recommendations?

The best book I have read on proper devotion to Mary is called ‘The Question of Mary’ by Fr Rene Laurentin (who recently passed away).

I strongly recommend Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman’s Letter Pusey also

“Treatise to True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin” by St. Louis de Montfort flies to mind. You can read it on the EWTN website.

Also The Diary of St. Faustina. And there’s a wonderful book about St. Padre Pio…if I still have it I’ll get back to you with it’s name. A Story of a Soul is also wonderful, but I’m afraid I don’t remember whether or not there was a lot regarding Our Lady.

If you don’t mind reading something by a Servant of God who isn’t a canonized saint (yet - I have high hopes!) then I highly recommend Brother Marcel Van. His spiritual director asked him to write down his life’s story, which he did, entitled “Autobiography.” His love for Our Lady is incredible, it practically leaps off the page!

There are 2 books I’ve read recently that I would highly recommend.
De vita beata by Saint Augustine (very useful since our culture mistakes pleasure for true happines)
Il Giovane Provveduto by Saint John Bosco (he’s very popular in my city :). I don’t know of there’s a english translation, I’ve read it in portuguese). That book is a precious treasure for young people like us.
