Introduction to the Old Testament for Catholics?

Are there any good books regarding understanding the Old Testament for Catholics?

I have gotten very little out of my attempts to read Genesis through Joshua.
 
Other’s will likely chime in with the same recommendation but I urge participation in “The Bible Timeline” by The Great Adventure Bible Study Series put out by Jeff Cavins.

It is the best, and well worth the effort.

Scott Hahn’s “A Father Who Keeps His Promises” is very good.

Jeff Cavins’ “Great Adventure” Series, as TimothyH mentioned, is also fantastic.

AgapeBibleStudy.Com has a free series on Salvation History that will cover this as well.

All three of these are very good, and they all follow the same Orthodox teachings… just at different levels.

I’d suggest any of these options.
 
Here is a free audio series called Understanding the Scriptures. I just recently found it and have not listened to it yet. I’m not sure but I think it is a companion to the book put out by Scott Hahn of the same title.

The book just mentioned by Duggan looks very promising judging by the blurb at Amazon.

Does there happen to be anything like the CCC that is specific to the scriptures?

I suggest you look at *And God Said What?: An Introduction to Biblical Literary Forms *by Margaret Ralph, Paulist Press. It is used in numerous Catholic Adult Ed scripture classes and covers the basics of reading and understanding scripture.

It is. Each of the 30 podcasts corresponds to one of the 30 chapters in Hahn’s book.
 
Well, after a busy fall, I started reading Duggan’s “The Consuming Fire: A Christian Guide to the Old Testament” along with the Old Testament as indicated.

I’m amazed at how differently I view the Old Testament after completing the first 25% of this course. It’s very different for me because I am so used to the New Testament.

A Christian Guide to the Old Testament is certainly an apt title.

When you get further on, Fr. Mitch Pacwa has an old EWTN series that they turned into a podcast, all about all the OT prophets and their historical background, and what the Hebrew literary styles they use mean. It’s fascinating, and it just goes on and on for something like 40 episodes. There’s some good episodes about Moses and Elijah and Elisha and David, though, so you might enjoy listening to those already.

Good question sir! I’m currently reading Revelation and let me give you some insight on what I do. I read the entire chapter, type up my own notes, and then find a commentary on the book. I’ll provide a link that will assist you in making sense out of those books.
I would look at Chuck Smith or Vernon McGee.

Here is an excellent Catholic Bible study on Genesis by Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitch. They will be doing the rest of the Old Testament book by book. I believe Exodus will be available this month.
