I awoke from a nap on Saturday afternoon to find an intruder in my apartment.

I don’t think I handled the situation the same way that Jesus would have. :o Leaving out the expletives… I told him to leave immediately or I would kill him. Adrenaline was high. He only had a moment to turn and leave before I was going to attempt to beat him into a submissive non-threatening state. He quickly left.

What do you think? Sinful? Should have handled it differently? Thanks.

I hoped you called the police afterward an intruder is an intruder. Who knows what could have happened since you surprised him. What if he was armed? I think you handle the situation well given the circumstance.

I don’t blame you for getting rough with the intruder. Afterall, he wasn’t in your apt to play a game of tiddleywinks now was he. 😉

This is where a good old dog can come in handy to alert you to the fact that a stranger has entered your domain especially when you are napping or showering where you might not hear someone entering.

You handled it well, you are still alive right??

There are some good old boys (and probably girls too) in my neck of the woods that would have made him awfully sorry and oh so apologetic that he decided to wandered in.

You were surprised and scared. I wouldn’t consider it sinful.

Thank God you weren’t assaulted. He’s very lucky you didn’t shoot first and ask questions later. Had you not been so forceful in your words he may have attacked you.

Funny thing…

When I thought about it later, I wasn’t worried about my stuff. I really wasn’t worried about my own safety. It was more that he didn’t belong in my place. I wanted to defend my right to property, not the property itself. That, and, the fact that I was not dressed for company. The thought crossed my mind that I was wearing boxers - I have no patience when I am not wearing pants. 😊

Just think, if you hadn’t been wearing anything he may have run out without you having to say a word.

As I understand it, we’re not completely responsible for our “automatic” responses when we’re surprised, startled, or scared.

In hindsight, here’s my analysis: 1) your response was only verbal; 2) your response got the desired result; and, 3) no one was hurt. You done good.

You did well to handle it the way you did. After all I am sure some would have beaten him first etc.

The parables seemingly seem to teach us that we should offer the sinner what they need don’t they? They are generalised teachings for us to adopt into our daily lives. He may have ran just as fast if you said, stay and I will say a prayer with you to help you feel at peace 🙂 He may well have ran just as fast if you offered him mug of tea before he left. You did right by what the police tell us to do. And the Bible teaches us to obey the law of the land doesn’t it not?

He should thank the Lord he made it out of their alive.

If it was my house…Mama Bear mode would have commenced and I would have gone directly for the hand-gun my husband keeps in the house.

I’m not playing that game of merciful hope when I have a baby girl in the house with me.

You did fine.

Wow, how frightening! Thank God you are okay!

In my opinion, you should have no worries about how you reacted as far as any sin being involved. I think what you did was perfect and not sinful at all. It is perfectly acceptable to stand up for yourself and your property. If you hadn’t been verbally aggressive, the intruder may have acted differently and then you may have had to actually get physically aggressive. Even if that had happened, I don’t think that would have been sinful. He had no right to be there at all.

You made me laugh just now…I am needing to laugh this morning, so thank you. I am sorry you had to go through that, but just know that your humorous post helped me a lot.

🙂

I think you handled it as perfectly as any non-God-man could.

Might I suggest you invest in a nice pump-action shotgun? There isn’t a whole lot scarier in the world than the sound of a round being racked in a dark house.

In combination with a low growl from a large German Shepherd, it’s likely to leave a puddle for the homeowner to have to clean up!

🙂

Well, since the goal of any self-defense situation is to survive it with as little injury to yourself or others as possible, I think you did very well. Who knows, a meek response may have emboldened them. Your strong words worked, you can monday morning quarterback all you want to but you’ll never know if a different course of action would have resulted in a much worse result.

Well, if you’re going to use a shotgun for self-defense they shouldn’t be able to hear the racking sound because they’re deaf from you firing the round you keep chambered before having to rack the slide to chamber the next one. (120+db in an enclosed space really makes your ears ring).

What sort of intruder was this? Was it someone’s lost four-year-old or an elderly man with dimensia? I don’t understand why you would think it is wrong to chase off an intruder in that manner. If someone has broken into your house then I think you have the perfect right to defend you home, pants or no. If someone has wandered aimlessly onto your property without meaning harm to anyone, I would say the right thing to do would be to make sure that they find their way back to whoever is responsible for them. Granted, sometimes we don’t always know what is going on and one has to make a split decision.

I used to live in an apartment complex where all the doors looked the same. This certain man had just moved in to the apartment with his girlfriend and I guess he didn’t have a key yet. He came home from working a very late shift and found that his girlfriend had locked the front door but left the sliding screen door open. He stepped inside and discovered that he was on the wrong floor. An altercation insued and the occupant of the apartment ended up slicing the lost neighbor’s arm with a kitchen knife. I imagine their neighborly relationship was strained after that. In the next community newletter, the landlord informed us that the restriction on decorating one’s door and balcony outside of the Christmas season had been repealed.
