Anyway, the guy was not caught, but, the girl he assaulted did not sustain permanent injuries and nothing was stolen. But, it will be hard to get back to walking alone at night, even on lit, heavily trafficed streets. When I first came to campus, I just heard that we had at most petty theft in the area.

To the defense of the OP, the news alert was just like what she typed. I don’t think she purposely called out the man’s color but copied from the alert.
I see you never questioned if it is necessary to mention his age or his gender. Could not these be discriminated against? Why would you focus on skin color only?
