I’ve been dealing with very intrusive thoughts especially concerning certain very grave sins which happened prior to my (adult) Baptism. I’ve spoke to my Priest and he says not to confess the sins which the thoughts are about but only confess the possibility of dwelling on the intrusive thought and mention that the thought was about a past grave sin.

I’m really struggling to trust my Priest’s advice, I can’t help but feel that I’m withholding a sin if I don’t mention the exact sin the intrusive thoughts were about…

You need to listen to your Priest, and follow his advice. Trust him. We at CAF can only tell you to listen to the excellent advice you are getting.

I’d also suggest speaking to a health professional about your intrusive thoughts, if you aren’t already.

Thank you, it’s really difficult though as I feel I am withholding something if I don’t mention it.

I’ve been talking with someone in regards to the intrusive thoughts, they are almost always in regards to fear of sinning.

Keep listening to your Priest, and talk to him about it. But ultimately, follow his advice.

I’m glad to hear you’re getting some help. I hope you find some relief soon.

The sins are gone - they no longer exist, except in your memory. They remain in your memory, not to haunt you, but that you should have contrition and make a firm amendment not to repeat them. Intrusive thoughts, you say? That ‘can be’ part of anxiety/OCD. This can cross over from the spiritual to the psychological. Once again this is a mater to discuss with doctor, as it may be a cognitive disorder and not a spiritual failing.
