I’m curious about the Catholic view on baptism and raising kids Catholic for couples who are not in “valid” marriages as defined by the Catholic Church. As I understand it, as part of “valid” marriages per the Catholic church between a Catholic and non-Catholic or two Catholics, the parents agree to raise the children as Catholic. And as part of that they are expected to have the children also baptized as Catholics.

But does that same expectation to raise the children in the Catholic church extend to couples who were not “validly” married in the Catholic church? I.e. the parents either are both Catholic and did not marry in a church or receive dispensation to do so outside the church, or probably more likely and problematic if one of the parents is not Catholic and they similarly did not marry in a Catholic church or receive dispensation to marry outside a Catholic church. Does the same requirement still apply to these “invalid” marriages to raise the children Catholic and have them baptized Catholic from a Catholic Church POV? Particularly if the other parent is of another faith tradition and they want to raise the children in that tradition?

All Catholics are expected to raise their children as Catholic. Whether they are married, in irregular marriages, or a single parent. After all, why bother to be a Catholic if you don’t think its important enough to raise a child in? However, there is no formal promise expected in such irregular situations.

When a couple prepares to get validly married, the Church asks the Catholic party to declare his/her faith and promise to do his/her best to raise the children as Catholics. The non-Catholic party makes no promises and is only informed of the promises made by the Catholic party.
