I went to confession today. I told the priest one of the bad thoughts that has crossed my mind. I told him i rejected the thoughts and did not mean them. He said it was not a sin. But he was in a hury because mass was about to start. So we finished quickly. I wanted to tell him the thoughts where kinda intentional and kinda not. But didn’t. Was i withholding a mortal sin.

Sounds a bit flubbed. But absolution is absolution. That’s not your fault you were under pressure. You might try again.

Yeah i didnt like the thought at all. I get a lot of intrusive thoughts (OCD). So i don’t think the thought was intentional since i didn’t like it. But apart of me feels like it was.

Yes. It’s valid. No need to be scrupulous. It will only wear you out. Trust God loves even the imperfect.

I struggle so much with this too 😦 Scrupples and intrusive thoughts are the worst combination there can ever be.

If you can say the thoughts were at all not intentional then I would think you are fine. If you didn’t like the thought that is a great indicator that it wasn’t something you willed at all.

But I’m really not sure why you are worried in the context of confession. It sounds like you confessed to having a bad thought. So whether it really was intentional or not you confessed it. It it wasn’t intentional then it wasn’t even a sin at all.

Since you’re scrupulous I think the best source of advice would be your pastor and/spiritual director.

Thoughts in and of themselves are not sinful - it’s what you do with those thoughts.

Let’s say that you get a blasphemous thought - do you reject it and smash it on the Rock of Christ?

Or do you accept it and begin blaspheming God with your soul?

You are not your thoughts.

Things enter everyone’s minds that they don’t want to think. They aren’t your fault.

That’s for everyone here who has intrusive thoughts, know this, @Jordo , @Lea101 , and of course the OP. Sometimes we get so hung up on a thought, but they really may mean just about nothing.

Yeah but i didn’t say if it was intentional or not wouldn’t that make it invalid

Unintentional thoughts aren’t sinful. A really awful or immoral idea can just come into your head. That doesn’t mean you’ve sinned.
