I’ve heard that the Lefevrite priest cannot hear confession and witness marriages because they lack jurisdiction.

Wouldn’t this apply to the Orthodox too, at least it would make those sacraments invalid for a Catholic?

Are other Christians bound by Canon law?

Hi Zorrox,

The SSPX priests, who were Catholics when they started, were suspended “a divinis”, that is from administering the sacraments. Those who were ordained later were not suspended because they are not considered Catholics. The Church exercises its jurisdiction only on its own subjects. So the Orthodox as well are not “suspended”.

Whether a priest is suspended or is in a schismatic position, he validly administers the sacraments.

Hi Zorrox,

To complete my answer, a marriage contracted before a non-Catholic priest is invalid unless authorized by the local bishop.

Members of non-Catholic churches can be validly married in their own churches.

Of course, non-Catholics are not bound by Canon Law, but they may be affected by it, if, for example, they marry a Catholic.

Please remember also that in extreme circumstances, such as danger of death, a Catholic can receive absolution, the Anointing of the Sick or Holy Communion from a non-Catholic priest who is validly ordained.
