Inverted Cross/Cross of St. Peter

The inverted cross still makes me feel uncomfortable because of the use by satanists.
 
I know what you feel-many have associated inverted crosses with satanists because of the movies and some, because of it’s actual use by satanists. how sad. 😦

as a side note,but i’ve read once that some satanists don’t even believe in satan. they kinda view him as a metaphor or a figure.
actually, these satanists ARE doing satan’s bidding! :mad:

Most satanists don’t believe in Satan, it’s really more of a “religion” for atheists.

Why should it bother any Christian? The symbol has been in use as a Christian symbol way before there was any Hollywood hype which made it a Satanic symbol.

The only possible way that it could still make you feel uncomfortable is if you have something in the back of your head telling you Catholics are really Satanists. ;p

Since I was little,I always knew an inverted cross is the cross of St Peter,and I don’t feel uneasy when I see one.I remember one day on a bus,a guy sat next to me,he had an inverted cross hanging from a chain around his neck,I looked at it and he said,“It’s the cross of the devil”.I answered,“Oh, I thought you were devoted to St Peter”. Inmediately he took it off and left it on the seat and climbed off the bus.

Can I ask you, did you learn about the inverted cross being satanic first, and then later on being told the ST,Peter story ?

The reason I’m asking is if you were told it was satanic first, then that may be part of the problem.

If so it can be hard to shift from the mind, first impressions last, for me it was different.
As a child we were told this story about the inverted cross, so when it is brought up I Immediatley think of Saint Peter, it can be hard to shake off what has been ingrained in us for a long time.
 
I didn’t associate it with Peter, since he could have been crucified upside down on a right-side up cross. I always saw the inverted cross as occultists’ turning the work of Christ on it’s head - literally.

If I thought Catholics were satanists’ I wouldn’t be posting on this forum. :rolleyes:

One of the greatest lies Satan has done, are the lies about the Catholic Church. It does not surprise me that the upside down Cross, which as you can see from what has been written, is from the time of the apostles and is meant to show humility, has been able to be associated with occultists. And the pope, out of any church leader, must be particualarly careful about remaining humble. So a constant reminder, like the chair of Peter, are helpful in doing so.

Before I really started to go to Church, I remember seeing a movie directed by John Carpenter. Without getting into too many specifics, they took the simple phrase “He lives!” and turned it into something horrific. After I started to live out my life for Christ, I was unable to sing joyful songs with that phrase.

I finally asked God to restore the Real meaning to those words for me and remove the horror. Maybe you could do the same, asking for God to restore the meaning of humility to the upside down cross instead of the false and replaced meaning occultists and movie directors have put upon it.

It’s a symbol most associated with satanism, and I was surprised to see it had another meaning. I still wouldn’t display one, since it was the rightside up cross that Christ died on to save us.

I was recently looking through a book of symbols at the library, when I came upon the image of an upside down cross. I expected it to say it was the symbol for the occult or satanism. It identified it as the cross of St. Peter, since the Apostle was crucified upside down.

What can you tell me about this?

That is a good question I also recently noticed Ophra Winfrey wearing a diamond inverted cross and was somewhat perplexed
 
Oprah is into the new age thing, as many people know. She was stunned when she had members of the church of satan on her program, and learned that satanists beleive a lot of the same things the new age does. :eek:

Maybe she was wearing a cross and it simply slipped upside down? My crucifix sometimes flips over, appearing to be an ordinary cross.

But historically and every other way, the symbolism of the upside down cross was stolen from Christianity and perverted.

To Catholics Christians, it is a beautiful reminder of our unworthiness and of Christ’s sacrifice.Having a upside down cross is to remind us to be humble. Even a thieves death, since it was the death our Savior did, is not good enough for us.

Most associated? I am angered by your insistence that it is “most associated” with those who stole our very Christian symbol of humility. Only if you are ignorant of the history of Christianity.

ps. I do realize it may not be your intent, and it may be most associated to YOU and other* new* denominations to Christianity, but taking a symbol that has been in the Christian Church since the time of the apostles and saying it is “most associated” is frustrating, angering, and saddening.

The inverted cross, in today’s world at least, is mostly associated with satanism. That’s not to say it wasn’t taken from christianity and perverted, but that the most recognised meaning among people today is the occult. Go ask every day people what the inverted cross means to them.

No. It was not a personal attack. Which is why the ps was added.

What I am saying is that even Catholic children see an upside down cross and think of the story of Peter, yet other Christians are willing to abandon this very Christian symbol.
 
That’s because the only exposure non-catholic christians have to the inverted cross is in connection to satanism. It’s not their fault they’re not exposed to everything you are exposed to as a catholic. How would you see it if you only saw it in connection to satanism?

I would probably see it as you do.

But truly, when you talk of personal attacks, don’t you see how Catholic Christians feel when people say it is “mostly associated with satanism” and Catholics have been using it since apostolic times? And are accussed of the pope being the Anti-Christ? And are accussed not being Christian?

Sometimes I would just like someone to say, wow, What a great thing, Humbleness. I am going to do that and explain it to all my Christian friends and take back completely this Christian symbol.

Pipe dream? yeah. But it still doesn’t keep me from pushing, trying and explaining.

Confusing an inverted cross for a satanic symbol isn’t an attack against catholicism. If that’s someones’s experience with seeing the inverted cross, then that’s something totally unrelated to how they veiw catholicism. I only asked about it to see what the truth about it is.
