PEORIA, Ill.—A Dec. 11 Mass in Peoria, Ill., marked the official conclusion of an investigation tribunal into an alleged miracle that many attribute to the intercession of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen.

Since Sept. 7, the tribunal has looked into the alleged miraculous healing of James Fulton Engstrom, a 1-year-old born without a pulse last year, whose parents credit his survival to the late archbishop.

The Mass, open to members of the public, was held at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, where Archbishop Sheen was an altar server when he was a boy.

Official tribunal documents were sealed at the Mass by Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria and Msgr. Stanley Deptula. Msgr. Deptula is the executive director of the Archbishop Fulton Sheen Foundation, which is the official promoter of the archbishop’s cause for sainthood.

The documents will now be shipped to the Vatican for consideration.

If the alleged miracle is approved by the Pope, U.S. Catholics could witness the first-ever beatification on American soil in the Diocese of Peoria, said the foundation.

On Sept. 16, 2010, Bonnie Engstrom and her husband, Travis, prayed fervently to Archbishop Sheen after she delivered a stillborn son.

The baby, whom they named James Fulton after the archbishop, had no pulse for 61 minutes after he was born.

As doctors prepared to declare the time of death, however, his heart started beating. Although the physicians predicted serious medical problems, James Fulton is now a happy, healthy 1-year-old.

In addition to serving as an auxiliary bishop of New York and bishop of Rochester, N.Y., Archbishop Sheen was best known for his weekly radio broadcast, The Catholic Hour, and his later weekly television program, Life Is Worth Living.

The archbishop died December 9th, 1979, and his cause for sainthood was opened in 2002.

A second approved miracle will be necessary before Archbishop Sheen, currently called a Servant of God, will be declared a saint.

This is actually the third alleged miracle being sent to Rome in regards to Sheen’s intercession.

I know it was a slim hope on my part, but I had hoped that he would have been declared venerable this year.

This list from the Congregation for the Cause of Saints just came out. Nothing this time around for his cause. 😦

I feel in some respects like you, but its typical and prudent of the Holy See to move slow and cautiously in these matters.

Archbishop Fulton J Sheen was an incredible prolific spiritual speaker and writer.
Love this priestly man. Never afraid or shamed to say there’s always a profound insight to be received re-reading his books and listening to his recorded talks.

God Bless him!

Amen! 👍
Love him. Love all that he has and continues to teach me thru the books and talks that are part of his priestly legacy.

And yes, there is a great deal of prudence of the Holy See to take it’s time. And it’s not like the Bishop is the only one with an active cause before the them.

Centurion,

Which of his books would you recommend to begin with?

TIA!

This is only my personal favorite The Life of Christ. I got so much from this book and am still amazed re-reading it. IMHO it really brings the entire New Testament into focus.

Archbishop Sheen is a master in articulate penmanship. It often made me feel I was walking with Jesus right there. And if you have a soft place in your heart it will stir emotions in a good way even if find yourself with a tear rolling down your face. I wish I could be more articulate how I feel about this book of Sheen’s. You won’t regret it.

This is not to say many of his other penned books are not excellent resources.

Peace
Chris

Maybe I have faith in things like this too easily but I believe that it is definitely a true miracle which was the result of the intercession of Archbishop Fulton Sheen.
