Hello: I am looking for a prayer formula for investment of the Brown Scapular. I have looked in the book of blessings, but can not find one. I was also told that any form or wording can be used. We hope to proceed with this on July 16th. Thank you for your help…

Your priest should have the prayer for enrollment in the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

A related question: Can a deacon invest in the scapular? All the prayers I’ve seen refer to “priest,” but inasmuch as deacons are empowered to bless sacramentals, I was wondering about their authority to invest in the brown scapular.

I doubt it.

Hello: Thank you for your response. Our parish priest doesn’t seem to have the prayer. I am looking for him. Is there anyplace on the internet that I can find the simple formula? I don’t have time to order a book, since we have already placed the notice for July 16th. Anything you can do to help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mary Emma

I, too, have a question about investment. I was given a brown “scapular” as part of a bag of “goodies” for lack of a better term. I was invested using this scapular. Now that I read the webpage that provided the regulations and ritual, and see that the scapular is to be made of 100% wool and not covered in plastic, I have to say mine is both not wool, and it’s covered in plastic. I ordered a crusader’s scapular, but it’s not here yet. But, do I need to be re-invested with a proper scapular? Also, it said you you have to live chastely according to your state in life. If you’re married, what does that mean? And if you don’t do the prayers associated with the devotion, or fail to live chaste according to your state, must you be re-invested? Ok, novel complete… 🙂

Hi, yes it’s true it needs to be wool… I have a similar problem, I have a scapular but it’s not real wool. I’m waiting to get a better one. I don’t think you’d have to get reinvested? I think the blessing transfers to the new scapular… but I might be wrong!! (does anyone else know?)

living chastely doesn’t mean being celibate, if you’re married. It means just avoiding any sin against purity.

I don’t think you have to be reinvested if you fail at this or if you don’t do the prayers, but the scapular is effective once you start fulfilling the ‘conditions’… at least, that is my understanding!

lol sorry I don’t know for sure…

God bless

I was invested with the Brown Scapular and enrolled in the confraternity of Our Lady this morning by a traditional Benedictine Priest, Deo Gratias. I believe it is a way of both venerating, honoring and trusting our Blessed Mother with our lives. The ceremony was in Latin and though not a Latin scholar, Rev. Fr. Gabriel did a wonderful job. The investment came shortly after a High Mass in the Tridentine form(not going to EVER use the term EF as that demeans the True Mass).
