I was invited with a friend to an ecumenical Good Friday service and later to a play called Jesus is… at a Pentecostal church.

I want to go to the God Friday service at the Catholic Church I attend and feel odd telling this person no. I might be able to do both but it would be a tight squeeze. The play is at night and won’t interfere

I have never been to either of these things. If you have what will it be like? As a Catholic should I attend these non Catholic service and play?

Would love your thoughts. Thanks

Well, there is no obligation to go to the Good Friday service. But it probably be better if you went to the Catholic service instead of the ecumenical one. And go to the play if you want and enjoy it. 👍

It is ok for you to go to the Good Friday service at the Pentecostal church; next year invite your friend to the Catholic Church.

You are not obliged to attend the solemn liturgy of the Lord’s passion on Good Friday - the Good Friday obligation is to fast. That being said, it is such a beautiful and important liturgy on the Church’s calendar, I would strongly encourage you not to miss it. Tomorrow we commemorate Our Lord’s passion and death.

Personally, I would expect to be bored to death. I hope there are not sniffling little kids dressed as angels… terrible memories of my youth appear. (I was St. Joseph. Mary was the nun’s favourite, and it all went down hill when the angel on the rope fell into the manger…)
Go to the Mass of the Pre-sanctified. More edifying and rewarding in Grace.
Unlikely, you might say, given it is Easter. But I believe in erring on the side of caution. There might be bunny suits…
On the bright side, there might be free eggs…

I didn’t think Pentecostals “did” Good Friday. I would want to go just out of curiosity.

I myself wouldn’t have any interest in going. The Catholic Good Friday Veneration of the Cross is so beautiful, and moving. Nothing tops that for me, just my :twocents:

You fiend would have no trouble declining an invitation to your parish. Don’t worry.

Thanks everyone. I just don’t think I feel comfortable. I noticed that it was in the neighboring Parishes bulletin, so it looks like the Ecumenical service includes the Catholic Church and maybe that is why it was a harder decision for me.

OOPS! I meant FRIEND, not fiend.
Yikes. How embarrassing. That’s what I get for posting from my phone early in the mornign.

So sorry, no disrespect. :o
Blessings to you!

If you’re going to a Pentecostal service then make sure you don’t take communion…if it’s like the Pentecostal church I was a member of years ago then they would pass a tray around with tiny glasses of grape juice and broken pieces of crackers…it is only symbolic…they do not believe nor profess it to be the body and blood of Jesus…if you can go without missing the celebration of our Lords passion and death which is far more important…then by all means enjoy the play…ps…they may not have communion on Good Friday…it’s been that long since I was a member

The play is just a play at the church. It is not a service. The ecumenical service is in the afternoon at a different church. I don’t take communion unless it is at a Catholic Church

One of our local Lutheran congregations mentions the Stations of the Cross on Fridays in their bulletin as part of their Lenten worship. Of course (at Sacred Heart Catholic Church) is in parentheses.

I wonder if it’s just me, or does this generation of millennials really dig Lent? Not just Catholics, but other young Christians in general. It’s really awesome to see how many teens are attending daily Mass during Spring Break and summer vacation, when school’s out. We may have to switch from daily Mass in the chapel to the Church building, to accommodate the flock. I hope more parishes other than mine have this “problem.”🙂

That is awesome they all attend.

I was sad at the attendance for Holy Thursday, however the snow did not help and there were 2 Masses

They’d probably understand if you said no. Just get coffee or something to discuss what happened later. 🙂

I invited her to the Good Friday service at my Catholic Church and she said no thank you. I told her I don’t want to miss my Churches service and politely declined going to hers. I just want to enjoy the triddum. No offense to other religions… but I am roman Catholic

What you propose is OK, so long as the priority in the CATHOLIC Good Friday Service:)

BUT do NOT participate in any part of their service; especially their Communion [if offered?]
