I know that Catholics are not allowed to join the Masons or “masonic-type” organizations such as the Knights of Pythias or Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). My FIL and SIL are buried in an IOOF cemetery (they were not members of that organization), and my MIL owns two or three more plots there. Does anyone know if it is allowable for Catholics to be buried in an IOOF cemetery?

Generally, Catholics can be buried in noon-Catholic cemeteries. I don’t know of any prohibitions so long as the remains are treated respectfully (in the case of an IOOF cemetery, this probably means additionally that the marker doesn’t make an appearance that the Catholic was an IOOF member).

Something that surprised me is that the local Catholic cemetery not only accepts non-Catholics but also allows them to choose masonic symbols for their markers. It is surreal to see those markers in the mausoleum during Mass.

“In accordance with Catholic teaching, the funeral service for a Catholic consists of bringing the body of the deceased to the Church, the celebration there of Mass, followed by interment, preferably in the consecrated ground of a Catholic cemetery.”

Stylites:

Where did you find that quote?? Do you know of any writings/bible versus/tradition writings on burial in consecrated ground for Catholics.

Consecrated ground = the ground being blessed. Correct?

What is preferable is not an absolute requirement. The priest can consecrate the gravesite, itself, if the person is interred in a non-Catholic cemetery.

Thank you. Family members received Catholic Masses and burials…I think all is fine.
