I used Laudate today for my noon Office.
I noticed that the translation is somewhat different from my SHORTER CHRISTIAN PRAYER.
Are there some translations more “acceptable” (for want of a better word) than others?
My Laudate app says it uses the free version of the Universalis text for the Liturgy of the Hours: it’s possible that your version, where ever you live, is slightly different. The free version of Universalis uses the Jerusalem Bible except for the psalms, where it uses a unique translation. The paid-for version is more customisable, and includes translations that you will be more familiar with. There are different translations into English approved for use in different regions. If you are praying as a private devotion, as opposed to because you have an obligation to do so, you can use whatever translation you like.
In America, the official English translation (“The Liturgy of the Hours”) uses the NAB and the Grail Psalms, as you will be familiar with from Mass if you are American. The prayers are an ICEL translation, as in the group that translated the versions of the Creed and Gloria that we no longer use. In England, Australia, and several other places, the official translation (“The Divine Office”) uses the Grail Psalms and Gospel Canticles, and the rest is from a variety of translations, meaning it is difficult to navigate the copyrights, but it’s pretty interesting. It only partially uses the Jerusalem Bible, which you will be familiar with from Mass if you live in one of these countries, but if you’re praying from an app in these countries you generally find the Jerusalem Bible with Grail Psalms is the closest you’ll get, and is pretty good.
If you are praying as a private devotion, you can use whatever you can access.
