Ladies and Gentlemen,

Help a crochety old man figure out what his kids are talking about.

Both my boys have a great desire for an iPod Touch. The 4th generation I think is around $195. The 5th generation (latest?) is $295. First off - what’s the difference between the 4th & 5th generations?

Next, I’ve seen advertisements for Tablets running a Droid OS. I saw one today for $64. I could buy a microSD card for $30, stick it in there and have as much ‘memory’ as the iPod.

So what’s the difference between an iPod and a Tablet? Why would one want one over the other?

Thanks!

A tablet won’t really replace an iPod. The cheap tablets really aren’t worth it anyway.

If the cost is an issue, just get the older iPod. If you can afford it comfortably and they need to take good photos, the newer iPod has a much better camera. Aside from that, it’s difficult to justify the extra expense.

I have an iPod touch. and iPod touch is basically like an iphone, but without 3g service (which means it can’t make phone calls). It can play music, you can buy movies and tv shows from iTunes and view them on it. You can also play a LOT of apps. I have a 3rd generation that doesn’t have a camera. The newest ones have the camera. The difference in price has to do with how much space (8 GB for $195 and 32 GB for $295) iPAD is the tablet and is much more expensive and bigger. You can check apple.com’s store and you can buy refurbished iPods, etc, for a little cheaper than a brand new one. They still come with the Apple 1 year warranty.

You can buy a 4th generation iPod touch with 8 GB (user space would be around 6 or so gigs I think).for $129 OR for $179 a 32 GB one.
As long as they get an iPod touch, I don’t think they’d care if it was “refurbished”

edit: did not see you said the Tablet was Droid OS! I would not recommend a cheaper Android tablet. And when I say cheaper, I mean brands that are weird names that you don’t recognize.

If you did a tablet, there’s the Kindle FIRE that is $199 and you get 16 GB of space. You can play games (but are limited to Amazon’s app store) and watch movies (you can also access Netflix or hulu plus). There’s also the Nexus by Google which is $199.

A good place to get advice is to go to KimKomando’s website and look for her tablet guide IF you went that route.

Depending on the ages of your sons, I’d go the route of the iPod touch and get refurbished.

While it doesn’t have cell service, if you get the iPhone’s headset (the one with the mic) and Google Voice (or Skype), you can make phone calls while on wifi. You can even get a “mifi” device (one that basically converts a 3G signal to wifi) and use it everywhere.

Crazy, huh?

I’m wondering why the comparison between an iPod and an tablet, since they’re different and have little to compare with. I’m thinking more that an iPad would be the one compared to a tablet, since both are more similar to use.

Tablets are bigger. :o

Wikipedia has a chart with all the iPod Touch generations side-by-sde (followed by a chart of all the iPad tablets side-by-side):

Wikipedia is good for stuff like this. 🙂

There’s really no huge advantage to the 5th generation other than a better camera. You’re right that the 5th generation is the latest. It just came out last month. The 4th generation came out in October 2010.

I finally got an iPad this year. It is an amazing device. I like it much better than my iphone, meaning when my contract expires, I want to go back to a non-smart phone and instead have a data plan on my ipad.

Lastly, now that I have an ipad I do not much instinctive to get the new iphone or even a new laptop.

Apple technology has a smack I don’t like, because it’s so expensive, and due to unnecessary things.

Iphones for example don’t allow you to change the battery once it’s life cycle is over, and it’s very hard to play media content which isn’t paid for in the expensive apple itunes store, as far as I know.

Same with the new cheap amazon tablets, which are excellent technologically, but go to amazing lengths to block other content.

I got myself a google nexus tablet, which is very cheap and allows all kinds of free content and connectivity. The operating system, android, has a market share of about 70% now, so there’s all kinds of apps and possibilities.

Be aware that’s it’s very easy get adult bad content on all these devices, so discipline or a good confessor is required :-).

Tias.

The last I heard, Apple does not allow adult content in their app store. I don’t have an iPhone, but an iPod. I’ve only ever bought 1 song from iTunes. I’ve also bought a handful off of Amazon. The rest are my hundreds of CDs. It’s never had any issue playing any of them. 🤷

Recently got galaxy tab for my son. It is awesome device and I am worried he must use it properly

Best way to understand the differences is go into the electronics stores and mess around with the display units. Bring your sons, they’ll probably be able to show you. 😃

I’ve got iTouches, iPhones, Zeepads, etc. etc. Pros and cons to all depending on what you really want to do, what you can afford, preference for Android vs Apple etc.

ETA: You can replace the battery in your iPhone or iPod- or have someone else do it.

You can search youtube for vids on replacing batteries in various apple products if you can’t find a shop near your home that will do it for you. I’ve replaced batteries in iPods but not an iPhone yet.

I’ve had my iPad for almost a year and a half and love it. Have not gone to a smartphone, because for all intents and purposes, the iPad IS my smartphone.

Depending on what you want to do, the lack of ability to connect USB devices and the inability to accept memory cards can be a drawback to the iPad. I’m assuming that Apple still hasn’t added those capabilities to the iPad due to security concerns?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I need to taught my son about right usage of tablet.

I bought an ipad mini yesterday and really like it. I will remain a proud owner of a ‘dumb’ phone!
