DUBAI (Reuters) Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday (Dec. 27) that Muslims must improve the image of their religion, which has been tarnished by the violence of hardline groups such as Islamic State,
“It is our greatest duty today to correct the image of Islam in world public opinion,” Rouhani told a conference on Islamic unity in Tehran in a speech broadcast by state television.
His remarks were rare for a leader of Iran, which considers itself an authority in the Islamic world and often blames the “enemies” of the religion for problems in the Middle East.

did he have any plans on how to do this? yes the image has been tarnished and needs repair.

I wonder how they plan on doing this. I agree that Muslims should work to repair the image of Islam, but I also wonder how they would get attention for doing so. There’s a lot of good work done by Muslims that gets no attention.

Thought for the day:

Once there was a group of Muslims who took drugs and believed that only they represented “true Islam.” They sent suicide killers to kill those who opposed them, both Muslim and non-Muslim. They were a tiny minority of the Muslims, but were very influential. They even took over a major country and ruled it for a long time, despite various coalitions of enemies. They were universally feared and hated.

The leaders of this group have lately almost always married non-Muslim women, usually foreigners. They especially like models and actresses. They owned race horses, hotel chains, and yacht clubs. They were very rich–billionaires. One of them skiied in the Olympics. They collected honorary degrees from the best universities, and other honors left and right from countries all over the world. One became President of the League of Nations.

So here we have the Isma’ilis (or Assassins) of the 10-13th centuries, rulers of Egypt and much of N. Africa for 200 years. They assassinated (even our English word comes from the name of the drug they took–hashish) the Crusader Conrad of Montferrat and the Saljuq wazir Nizam al-Mulk, perhaps the most powerful person of his time. And of course their leaders in the 20th century have been called the Aga Khan. Quite a turnaround!
