"A former American hostage in Tehran who claims Iranian President-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was one of his kidnappers, says the country’s new leader threatened to kidnap his handicapped son and cut off his fingers and toes.
David Roeder, 66, told the German magazine Der Spiegel Ahmadinejad was present for at least a third of the interrogations during the time he was held, November 1979 to January 1981

“You don’t forget someone like that,” said the former assistant Air Force attache.

Roeder was one of 52 Americans at the U.S. embassy in Tehran captured by Iranian students and held for 444 days. The students said they were protesting U.S. refusal to hand over deposed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi for trial.
The former hostage, who says Ahmadinejad seemed to be calling the shots from the background, recalled being handcuffed to a chair and blindfolded during initial interrogation sessions.

“But once the blindfold came off, they had developed a plan that Ahmadinejad was instigating,” Roeder told Der Spiegel. “Because I was not cooperating, they threatened that they were going to kidnap my handicapped son and send various pieces of him – fingers and toes is what they mentioned – to my wife if I didn’t start cooperating.”

Roeder said he didn’t pay much attention to the elections, knowing the mullahs would approve only of a hardliner, but recognized Ahmadinejad immediately on television…"

Oh that. Nothing to get excited about. The Iranian equivalent of holding babies, eating ethnic foods and showing up at Memorial Day parades. All politicians have to do these things to be elected.

They showed pictures of the hostage taker that’s supposedly the new Iranian president, and if it’s the same guy I’ll eat my hat. They don’t look anything alike, except that they’re both Persian. Even professionals have said that they’re not the same guy.

Well he has admitted to being involved although he claims “he was against it” –

He was a member of the organization who planned it, and has said so himself. He’s denying taking direct part of the hostage-taking, however, which is what he’s being accused of here. The pictures of the hostage-taker that these people are saying is now the Iranian President looks absolutely nothing like the guy. Different nose, different eyebrows, different face structure.

I don’t believe for a second that it’s the same guy. I’m not saying anything good or bad about the Iranian president, as I don’t know much about him. All I know is that he’s clearly not the man in the pictures that these former-hostages are claiming he is.

Austrian authorities have classified documents suggesting that Iran’s president-elect may have played a key role in the 1989 execution-style slayings of an Iranian Kurdish leader and two associates in Vienna, a newspaper reported Saturday.

Austria’s Interior Ministry and the public prosecutor’s office are investigating alleged evidence pointing to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s possible involvement in the attack, the daily Der Standard reported.

Officials were not immediately available to comment on the report Saturday.

The allegations against Ahmadinejad come as some of the Americans who were taken captive in Iran in 1979 implicate the newly elected leader in the hostage crisis. Radical Iranian students took over the U.S. Embassy and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.

In Austria, Green Party leader Peter Pilz told the newspaper he wants a warrant issued for the arrest of Ahmadinejad, who he alleged “stands under strong suspicion of having been involved.”

Pilz accused the hard-liner of planning the murders of Kurdish resistance leader Abdul-Rahman Ghassemlou and two of his colleagues, all of whom were shot in the head at a Vienna apartment by Iranian commandos on July 13, 1989. A fourth victim survived the attack and was able to crawl out of the apartment and alert Austrian authorities.

Pilz told Der Standard his source was an unidentified Iranian journalist living in France, who he said also claimed to have evidence that former Iranian President Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani gave the order to have Ghassemlou killed. He did not elaborate.

He said Ahmadinejad, then a high-ranking member of Iran’s elite revolutionary guard, allegedly traveled to the Austrian capital a few days before the slayings to deliver the murder weapons to the commandos who carried out the attack. Austrian authorities have said the gunmen apparently entered the alpine country with Iranian diplomatic passports.

Pilz said the journalist was contacted in 2001 by one of the alleged gunmen, described as a former revolutionary guard who has since died in a drowning accident.

“The descriptions of the informant contained details of the scene (of the slayings) which could only have come from someone who was there,” Pilz said. He said the gunman’s account, which included “very convincing” evidence implicating Ahmadinejad, was turned over at the time to Austria’s federal counterterrorism agency.

Prague’s Pravo newspaper reported similar allegations on Friday, quoting Hossein Jazdan Panah, an exiled Kurdish opposition member, as saying Ahmadinejad “was in charge of hit operations abroad” at the time of the Vienna killings.

Ghassemlou, the gunmen’s principle target, was secretary-general of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan. His delegation had been in Vienna for secret talks with envoys from the Tehran regime. The gunmen managed to slip out of Austria after the attack and were never arrested.

Was it not a “democratic” election? Is this not one of the goals for the War (democracy in Iraq)?

No it was not a democratic election. It was a rigged ‘election’, like so many other ‘elections’ held by dictators and fascists. There really was no difference with this ‘election’ and the ‘elections’ held by Saddam.

Arbitrary Interference, Discriminatory Criteria Exclude Candidates
Iran’s discriminatory election laws and the Guardian Council’s exclusion of candidates prevents Iranian voters from freely electing candidates or standing for public office, Human Rights Watch said today ahead of Friday’s presidential election.

Oh man…did not want to cause a ruckus…what I meant to say was…yes this new president in Iraq may be responsible for or taken part in some nasty things…but was he not elected in a democratic election? And was not bringing democracy to Iraq one of the goals for the outcome of the War in Iraq?

I realized my error (Iran not Iraq). I was laughing at myself. Did you want me to comment on the link that you provided??
no need.

Iran is a interesting problem. The US policy was to encourage change from within. Not sure if we can wait for that to happen though with the CIA miscalculating the Iranian nuclear threat and Russia helping Iran get weapons. It looks like the European negotiations will fail. So the next step is UN sanctions, I guess. Not sure if Russia will go for that.

That’s enough for me –
Sheesh, the fact that he’s a militant, fanatical Muslim was enough for me. You needed him to have planned the attack to justify you’re dislike? 😃

Again, I don’t like the guy, I just dislike it when baseless slander is tossed in anyone’s direction. Well-based slander is much more fun, and far less likely to backfire 😛
